Australian Swimmer Isaac Cooper Steps Down After Drinking Session 2026

Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper has stepped down from the national team's leadership group after a drinking session caused him to miss the final night of competition at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 22-year-old gold medalist's actions have sparked debate about athlete conduct and team expectations, highlighting the pressures of elite sport.

Isaac Cooper's Leadership Exit: What Happened

Cooper, who won gold at the 50m backstroke at the 2024 World Championships, was seen drinking in Glasgow while his teammates competed. He also missed the team's wrap-up meeting, which directly violated Swimming Australia's code of conduct. The organization issued a statement confirming Cooper's voluntary decision to stand down from the athlete leadership group.

This incident casts a shadow over Australia's record-breaking performance, which included 37 gold medals. Cooper's absence from the final night and the subsequent meeting was a clear breach of team expectations, according to Swimming Australia.

Background: A History of Indiscretion

This is not the first time Cooper has faced disciplinary issues. In 2022, he was sent home from a swim camp for wellbeing challenges, including the use of medication, which cost him a chance to compete at that year's Commonwealth Games. His recent actions in Glasgow echo those earlier struggles, raising questions about his consistency and maturity.

Despite his talent, Cooper's career has been marked by ups and downs. He has appeared at two Olympics and was a key figure in promoting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, even participating in the King's Baton Relay at the Great Barrier Reef. However, his latest misstep has overshadowed his achievements.

Impact on the Australian Swim Team

The sanction has left the team on a sour note, distracting from their historic medal haul. Cooper's teammate, Henry Allan, has now emerged as Australia's premier men's backstroker, finishing fifth in the 50m and 100m events. Allan's rise highlights the depth of Australian swimming, but the leadership vacuum remains a concern.

Coach and team officials have emphasized the importance of accountability, with Cooper's voluntary step-down seen as a positive first step toward rebuilding trust. The team is now focused on future competitions, including the 2028 Olympics, where they hope to maintain their dominance.
