Hunter Valley Coal Mine Extension Sparks Fear for Children's

The proposed Hunter Valley coal mine extension by Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has sparked intense fear among locals about their children’s quality of life. At a community meeting in Branxton, New South Wales, residents voiced strong opposition to the 19-year extension that would become the largest coal project in the state.

What Is the HVO Coal Mine Extension?

HVO is a joint venture between Glencore and Yancoal. The open-cut project near Singleton comprises two mining areas—a north mine and a south mine—directly employing about 1,500 people. The northern mine’s planning approval expires this year, but HVO seeks permission to mine until 2045 at the north site and until 2042 at the south site.

The extension would extract an additional 430 million tonnes of coal, producing about 800 million tonnes of additional greenhouse gas emissions—most from burning the coal overseas. This comes at a time when fossil fuels are driving dangerous global heating.

Community Voices: Fear and Hardship

Janet Murray, a former blast furnace superintendent, told the Independent Planning Commission she opposes the extension. “I’m fearful for the quality of life that my children will have in a hotter world and also the state of the natural world,” she said. Her testimony cut to the heart of the dilemma: jobs versus a livable future.

Other residents echoed concerns about air quality, water contamination, and the long-term health of the Hunter Valley region. The commission must decide what kind of community will survive into the future.

Key Data: Comparison of Proposed Extension

Aspect HVO Extension Details
Duration 19 years (north mine until 2045, south until 2042)
Additional coal 430 million tonnes
Direct jobs ~1,500
Additional emissions ~800 million tonnes CO₂
Location Near Singleton, NSW Hunter Valley

Environmental and Climate Impact

The NSW Independent Net Zero Commission warned the Minns government that the extension contradicts the state’s climate targets. Burning the coal overseas would still contribute to global warming, affecting local communities through heatwaves, bushfires, and extreme weather.

Environmental groups argue that approving this mine would lock in decades of pollution and undermine Australia’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. The commission’s decision will set a precedent for future coal projects.

What’s at Stake?

  • Local health impacts from dust and pollution
  • Loss of biodiversity and water resources
  • Economic transition away from fossil fuels
  • Community polarization between jobs and environment
