Cockroach Movement Protests: Thousands Defy Delhi Police March

The Cockroach movement has sparked one of the largest anti-government demonstrations in years, as tens of thousands of protesters defied police orders and marched on Delhi to demand the resignation of India’s education minister. The crowd, largely made up of students and Gen Z-ers, filled the streets from early Monday morning, shouting anti-government slogans and calling for systemic change in India’s education system.

Delhi police, under the control of the central government, had denied permission for the march and imposed a ban on all public gatherings. Roads were barricaded, and internet services were shut down in the city center. Despite these measures, protesters attempted to move toward the parliament building, only to face police brutality including batons and teargas. Yet, the crackdown did little to deter the thousands who turned out, many expressing anger at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

What Is the Cockroach Movement?

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led movement, organized the march. Its name was inspired by remarks made in May by Surya Kant, the chief justice of India, who called some activists and unemployed youth “cockroaches.” What began as satire, founded by graduate Abhijeet Dipke, has quickly evolved into a serious political challenge to the Modi government. The CJP’s core demand is the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over exam chaos, after this year’s medical entrance exam—where more than 2 million students compete for just 130,000 places—was leaked again.

Key Demands of the Protesters

  • Resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
  • Overhaul of India’s exam system to prevent leaks and ensure fairness
  • Greater government accountability to young people and students
  • Protection of democratic rights, including freedom of assembly

Comparison: 2024 vs. Previous Anti-Government Protests in India

Protest Event Year Estimated Participants Key Issue
Cockroach Movement March 2024 50,000+ Education exam leaks and minister resignation
Farmers’ Protest 2020-2021 250,000+ Agricultural reform laws
Anti-CAA Protests 2019-2020 100,000+ Citizenship Amendment Act

Why This Movement Matters

The Cockroach movement represents a growing frustration among India’s youth with systemic failures in education and governance. With over 2 million students competing for limited medical seats, the repeated leak of entrance exams has eroded trust. The movement’s rapid growth from satire to a serious political force underscores the power of digital organizing among Gen Z. “They are calling this protest illegal, they are calling us anti-national,” said 22-year-old protester Rhythm Katoch. “But I am standing here to fight for our education system, for the rights of the young people and for our democracy.”
