Election deniers backed by Donald Trump swept Republican primaries in Arizona on Tuesday, setting up a high-stakes fall campaign that will test the GOP's appeal in the battleground state. Andy Biggs, a hard-right congressman and former chair of the House Freedom Caucus, won the nomination to challenge Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, while Alex Kolodin secured the secretary of state race. These results signal a continued embrace of Trump's election denialism within the party.
Key Primary Victories for Election Deniers
Andy Biggs, a central figure in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, easily defeated fellow congressman David Schweikert by appealing to the party's deeply conservative base. Biggs will now face Governor Katie Hobbs, who flipped the seat from red to blue in 2022. The race is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested in the country, with control of the governor's office carrying outsized national significance.

In the secretary of state race, Alex Kolodin—a Republican state representative and attorney who helped lead failed legal efforts to overturn Arizona's 2020 and 2022 election results—won the primary. He will face Democratic incumbent Adrian Fontes, who has positioned himself as a bulwark against election denialism. The winner will oversee elections in Arizona during the 2028 presidential race.
Trump's Reaction and Broader Implications
In an all-caps social media post, Trump declared a "COMPLETE SWEEP," adding that "MAGA CANDIDATES WON EVERYTHING LAST NIGHT IN ARIZONA." However, Arizona was a Republican stronghold for decades and only recently became a competitive swing state, driven by population growth and shifting suburban voting patterns. These primaries underscore the party's internal divide between establishment figures and Trump-aligned candidates.
