India-Bangladesh Relations Hit New Low Over Exiled PM's Speech 2026

India-Bangladesh relations have plunged to a fresh low after Bangladesh lashed out at India for allowing ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to address journalists in New Delhi. The diplomatic row underscores the fragile ties between the two South Asian neighbors, with Dhaka accusing India of giving a platform to a "convicted genocider" and undermining efforts to repair bilateral relations.

Hasina, who fled to India in 2024 following a student-led uprising, spoke on the second anniversary of the protests, vowing to return to Bangladesh in December despite facing a death sentence on charges of "crimes against humanity." Her speech, delivered via audio link, was her first since fleeing, and it has ignited a firestorm of diplomatic protests from Dhaka.

Bangladesh's Outrage and Accusations

Bangladesh's foreign ministry said it was "outraged" that Hasina was allowed to participate in the event, where she and her allies launched "venomous vitriol" against Bangladesh and its people. The ministry called the interaction "an affront to the sovereignty of Bangladesh" and renewed demands for India to extradite Hasina.

India, however, distanced itself from the news conference, stating it had no role in organizing it and would not endorse any political views voiced. This careful balancing act highlights India's attempt to manage its relationship with Bangladesh's new government while avoiding further escalation.

Hasina's Defiant Message

Hasina, 78, dismissed the criminal cases against her as politically motivated and accused Bangladesh's new government, led by Tarique Rahman, of economic mismanagement. She declared, "They may put me in a cell. They may kill me. Anything may happen, but I still have to go." Her defiant tone reflects her determination to return, despite the risks.

The Awami League, which Hasina led for years, is now banned in Bangladesh, and her party's future remains uncertain. Her speech has further polarized opinions, with supporters seeing her as a martyr and detractors viewing her as a fugitive justice.

Impact on Bilateral Ties

The latest incident has severely strained India-Bangladesh relations, which were already tense due to unresolved issues such as trade disputes, border security, and water sharing. The diplomatic spat could have broader implications for regional stability, as both countries are key players in South Asia.

The table above illustrates the shift in bilateral dynamics, with each side hardening its stance. Experts warn that continued friction could undermine economic and security cooperation, affecting millions of people in the region.
