Ukraine's decision to replace a fallen Lenin statue with Cossack chief Ivan Mazepa highlights a profound shift in national identity. The empty plinth on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, once occupied by Lenin, now symbolizes a break from Soviet past and a move toward Ukrainian heritage.
The Historical Context of Lenin's Fall
In 2013, the plinth was left empty after protesters toppled Lenin's statue during the Maidan revolution. This act was a powerful statement against Russian influence. Since then, Ukraine has accelerated its decommunisation efforts, removing Soviet-era monuments and renaming streets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed placing Mazepa on the plinth, saying, "Where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firm." Mazepa, a 17th-century Cossack leader, is celebrated for breaking with Moscow and fighting for independence.
Why Ivan Mazepa?
Mazepa is a controversial figure, but for many Ukrainians, he represents resistance and sovereignty. Unlike Lenin, who symbolizes Soviet oppression, Mazepa embodies Ukraine's struggle for self-determination. His legacy aligns with Ukraine's current fight against Russian aggression.
Professor Nataliia Kryvda from Taras Shevchenko National University supports the monument, stating, "He's our leader. Each culture needs to mark its space with memorials." She acknowledges Mazepa's contradictions but sees him as a fitting symbol of Ukraine's dynamic identity.
Decommunisation and Decolonisation
Ukraine's journey since 1991 has involved removing Soviet symbols and reclaiming its own history. The process intensified after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022. Replacing Lenin with Mazepa is part of this broader decolonisation effort.
According to Kryvda, "The USSR absorbed national cultures. It tried to make a single nation of Soviet citizens. Russia today looks at Ukraine and says we are one people. It isn’t true." This sentiment underscores the importance of monuments in defining national identity.
