MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster, and Growth 2026

The MLS new commissioner faces a pivotal moment as the league seeks to elevate its status. With the transition from Don Garber to Larry Berg, the priorities for MLS's new commissioner include securing a sustainable broadcast future, refining roster rules, and expanding the league's global footprint. These challenges will define the next era of American soccer.

Broadcast Strategy: The Apple Deal and Beyond

One of the most pressing items on the agenda is the MLS broadcast deal with Apple, which runs through the 2028-29 season. The partnership initially brought $250 million annually, but concerns about viewership and content depth have emerged. The new commissioner must decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to a hybrid model involving traditional networks.

Data from 2025 shows an average of 120,000 unique viewers per game, a figure that highlights the challenge of streaming adoption. The league needs to boost engagement through innovative programming and broader accessibility.

Expanding Audience Reach

To grow the fanbase, MLS must leverage social media and local partnerships. The 2026 World Cup on home soil offers a unique opportunity to capture new fans. Berg's leadership will be tested in capitalizing on this momentum.

Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

Another priority is modernizing MLS roster rules to attract top talent while maintaining parity. The current system, with its complex salary caps and designated players, often confuses fans and limits flexibility. Simplifying these rules could make the league more appealing to international stars.

Comparing MLS to other leagues, such as the English Premier League, reveals stark differences in spending and squad depth. A more transparent framework might help close the gap.

Youth Development and Academies

Investing in youth development is crucial for long-term success. The new commissioner should prioritize expanding academy systems and creating clearer pathways to first-team action. This not only improves talent but also reduces reliance on expensive imports.

Fan Engagement and Stadium Experience

Enhancing the fan experience both in-stadium and digitally is another key area. From affordable ticket pricing to interactive apps, MLS must modernize to compete with other sports and entertainment options.

• Improve streaming quality and reduce blackouts
• Introduce fan-focused initiatives like loyalty programs
• Expand community outreach programs

International Competitiveness

Finally, MLS must aim for international competitiveness in tournaments like the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Success on the global stage would elevate the league's reputation and attract more investment.

In summary, the MLS new commissioner has a full plate. From the Apple TV deal to roster reforms, each decision will shape the league's trajectory. With strategic planning and execution, Berg can lead MLS to new heights.
