Paraquat herbicide, banned in more than 70 countries and linked to Parkinson's disease, is being pulled from the Australian market by manufacturer Syngenta. The Swiss chemical giant says new regulations have made the product commercially unviable, marking a significant shift in agricultural chemical use.
Why Is Paraquat Being Pulled from Australia?
Syngenta's decision follows the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) imposing new restrictions in June. The changes include phasing out backpack sprayers, mandating additional personal protective equipment, and setting a lower maximum application rate per hectare. These regulations, combined with an increasingly expensive supply chain, led Syngenta to deem paraquat products commercially unviable.

The company's ANZ managing director, David Van Ryswyk, confirmed the phase-out will align with APVMA timelines. Paraquat has long been linked to Parkinson's disease, though the APVMA states the weight of evidence does not show that approved use increases risk of developing the condition.
Global Bans on Paraquat
Paraquat is prohibited in over 70 countries, including the European Union (since 2007), China, and Brazil. In Australia, it remains legal for agricultural use on broad-acre crops like grains, sugarcane, and cotton but is banned in domestic settings. The global trend toward restriction reflects mounting health and environmental concerns.
| Region | Status of Paraquat |
|---|---|
| European Union | Banned since 2007 |
| China | Banned |
| Brazil | Banned |
| Australia | Restricted (agricultural use only, being phased out) |
| United States | Restricted (certified applicators only) |
Key Takeaways from the Paraquat Ban
- Paraquat is highly toxic and linked to Parkinson's disease in epidemiological studies.
- Syngenta's withdrawal from Australia follows new APVMA restrictions that made the product economically unsustainable.
- The herbicide is banned in over 70 nations, reflecting global regulatory pressure.
- Farmers using paraquat must transition to safer alternatives or adjust practices.
- The phase-out will follow strict sell-out and use-by timelines set by Australian authorities.
FAQ About the Paraquat Herbicide Ban
FAQ
What is paraquat and why is it banned?
Paraquat is a highly toxic herbicide used in agriculture. It has been banned in over 70 countries due to links with Parkinson's disease and acute poisoning risks.
Is paraquat still legal in Australia?
Yes, but only for agricultural use with strict new restrictions. Syngenta is voluntarily pulling its products, so availability will decline according to APVMA timelines.
What does this mean for farmers?
Farmers using paraquat will need to switch to alternative herbicides or adjust crop management practices. The phase-out provides a transition period to minimize disruption.
The decision by Syngenta to pull paraquat from Australia underscores the growing global scrutiny of dangerous pesticides. As regulatory bodies tighten standards, the agricultural industry must adapt to safer, sustainable practices. Stay informed about chemical bans and their impact on farming—check back for updates.
