The recent UEFA vs FIFA standoff has created a rare but fragile united front in football's governance, as European associations push back against Gianni Infantino's private investment plan. This power struggle could redefine the sport's future.
UEFA's Unanimous Decision
In a surprising show of solidarity, UEFA's 55 member associations voted to boycott FIFA tournaments unless the proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) is scrapped. The decision, described as "touchingly unanimous" by a senior executive, marks a pivotal moment in football politics.

The unity is fragile, however, as FIFA has doubled down with clarifications that blame media for disrupting the consultation process. The September 19 deadline looms, and UEFA must maintain its stance to avoid being outmaneuvered.
Key Players: Ceferin vs Infantino
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has emerged as a strong leader, known for his "no bullshit" approach. His tough rhetoric has been matched with action, but Infantino's emissaries are likely probing for weaknesses within the European bloc.
Behind the Scenes Lobbying
Securing unanimity required intensive lobbying. One mid-sized federation, tempted by FIFA's riches, was brought back in line after intervention from a major club. Others changed tack late, surprising smaller nations. This internal politicking highlights the challenges of maintaining a united front.
