Utah Wildfire Helicopter Crash: Two Onboard, Rescue Efforts 2026

A firefighting helicopter crash in Utah has put two people onboard in critical conditions, as emergency crews battle difficult terrain and a new fire sparked by the crash. The Sikorsky S64 helicopter went down near Richfield, about 160 miles south of Salt Lake City, during efforts to contain the Widemouth 2 fire, which has already scorched over 105,000 acres.

Crash Details and Immediate Response

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash on Friday morning, but the US Forest Service initially declined to comment on the condition of the two passengers, asking for public patience while focusing on response efforts. Tyler Hecht, deputy incident commander with the Great Basin incident management team, described the terrain as "very difficult," noting that rescuers had not reached the scene because the crash itself ignited a new fire.

At a media briefing, Hecht said the morale among firefighters was "very somber," but they had taken a tactical pause, regrouped, and returned to fighting the blaze. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating, with investigators expected to arrive by Saturday evening.

Widemouth 2 Fire Status and Containment

The Widemouth 2 fire, sparked by lightning on July 27, has grown rapidly. As of Friday morning, it was only 19% contained, with 632 personnel assigned and seven helicopters dropping retardant and water. This fire is one of eight large fires burning across Utah, which cumulatively have affected more than 331,000 acres.

Risks of Wildland Firefighting

Utah Governor Spencer Cox highlighted the dangers, stating, "Wildland firefighting is among the most dangerous jobs in the world." This incident underscores the extreme risks faced by aerial firefighters, who often operate in unpredictable conditions, low visibility, and rugged terrain.

Key Takeaways from the Incident

• The crash involved a Sikorsky S64 helicopter, a heavy-lift aircraft commonly used for firefighting.
• Rescue efforts were hampered by the new fire started by the crash and difficult terrain.
• The NTSB and FAA are leading investigations to determine the cause.
• Fire containment remains low, with resources stretched across multiple fires.

Safety Measures and Future Prevention

This incident raises questions about aviation safety protocols during wildfire operations. Agencies are likely to review flight procedures, especially in areas with unpredictable wind patterns and heavy smoke. Enhanced training and improved communication between ground and air crews may be necessary to prevent future tragedies.

Impact on Local Communities

The fires have forced evacuations and threatened homes, but no injuries to civilians have been reported. Local authorities are coordinating with state and federal agencies to provide support and resources to affected areas.
