Utah Wildfire Helicopter Crash: Two Onboard, Search Ongoing 2026

A Utah wildfire helicopter crash has left two people onboard in a remote area near Richfield, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation. The Sikorsky S64 helicopter went down on Friday while battling the Widemouth 2 fire, which has scorched over 105,000 acres since July 27. Emergency crews face difficult terrain and a new fire sparked by the crash, delaying their arrival at the scene.

Rescue Efforts and Challenges

The US Forest Service has asked for patience as response teams work to reach the crash site. Deputy incident commander Tyler Hecht described the terrain as “very difficult,” and rescuers have not yet reached the accident location. The crash ignited a new fire, further complicating access and safety for ground crews.

Firefighters took a tactical pause to regroup, but morale remains “very somber,” according to Hecht. Despite the setback, they have resumed firefighting operations to contain the blaze, which was 19% contained as of Friday morning. Seven helicopters are actively dropping retardant and water, with 632 personnel assigned to the suppression effort.

Widemouth 2 Fire: A Growing Threat

The Widemouth 2 fire is one of eight large fires burning across Utah, collectively sweeping through more than 331,000 acres. This lightning-sparked fire has become a focal point for state and federal resources. The crash highlights the extreme dangers wildland firefighters face daily.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the incident a “painful reminder of the extraordinary risks these brave men and women accept to protect us.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash, with NTSB investigators expected to arrive by Saturday evening.
