Don't Date Brandon Review: A Lazy True-Crime Miss 2026

The Don't Date Brandon review reveals a true-crime documentary that fails to honor the survivors' stories it claims to tell. Despite the harrowing experiences of Amber Rasmussen and Athena Klingerman, this series feels lazy and misguided, offering little beyond recycled podcast material.

Why Don't Date Brandon Falls Short

Based on the podcast Ex-Wives Undercover, the show follows two women who were married to Brandon Johnson, a man accused of emotional abuse, manipulation, and coercive control. The title itself is misleading—more sitcom than serious investigative journalism. The first episode, the only one screened for critics, lacks depth and context, reducing complex trauma to sensationalized snippets.

The documentary's pacing is sluggish, and it relies heavily on reenactments that feel gratuitous rather than illuminating. Most importantly, it fails to provide a clear through-line of Brandon's pattern of behavior, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.

The Missed Opportunity for Education

True crime can be a powerful tool for awareness, but only if executed responsibly. This show misses that chance. Instead of teaching viewers to spot red flags, it wallows in voyeuristic details. The survivors' voices are present, but their agency is undermined by the show's focus on shock value.

What the Show Gets Wrong

First, the title trivializes the severity of the abuse. Second, the narrative jumps between timelines without clear context, making it hard to follow. Third, it gives undue weight to Brandon's alleged charm, inadvertently glamorizing his manipulative tactics.

• Lack of expert analysis: No psychologists or domestic abuse specialists provide insight.
• Incomplete storytelling: Key events are glossed over, leaving gaps in understanding.
• Missed educational angle: No actionable advice for viewers who may be in similar situations.

Survivor Stories Deserve Better

Amber and Athena's experiences are undeniably horrific. They were love-bombed, isolated, and controlled. But the documentary doesn't do justice to their resilience. Instead, it reduces them to passive victims, waiting for the audience's pity rather than inspiring action.

In contrast, documentaries like Abducted in Plain Sight or The Tinder Swindler balance entertainment with awareness, leaving viewers both shaken and informed. Don't Date Brandon achieves neither.

Final Verdict

If you're looking for a true-crime show that respects its subjects and educates its audience, skip this one. The survivors' stories deserve better than a lazy retread of a podcast. Perhaps future episodes will improve, but based on the first, this is a miss.
