Glen Hansard Obituary: Irish Music Legend Dies at 56 2026

Glen Hansard obituary: the Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter and actor has died at age 56 in a motorcycle accident. His passing marks the end of an era for Dublin's music scene, where he rose from busker to international star.

The Early Years: From Busking to The Frames

Hansard began his musical journey as a teenager, busking on Grafton Street in Dublin. His raw talent and distinctive voice quickly made him a local legend. In the late 1980s, he formed The Frames with fellow street musicians, building a loyal following at venues like Whelan's.

His big break came when director Alan Parker cast him as guitarist Outspan Foster in the 1991 film The Commitments. Despite on-set conflicts with Parker, the film's success brought Hansard international attention. However, the band's debut album Another Love Song flopped, and Island Records dropped them.

Rise to Fame: The Frames and Beyond

The Frames persevered, releasing Fitzcarraldo (1995) and later achieving Irish chart success with For The Birds (2001) and Burn The Maps (2004). Their seventh album, Longitude, came out in 2015. Meanwhile, Hansard collaborated with Czech-Icelandic pianist Markéta Irglová in The Swell Season, whose debut album in 2006 led to the acclaimed film Once.

Oscar Win and International Stardom

For the song "Falling Slowly" from Once, Hansard and Irglová won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008. This cemented his status as a global music icon. He continued releasing solo albums, including Didn't He Ramble and This Wild Willing.
