A Louisiana House candidate accused of rape is hoping to regain Donald Trump's endorsement after a redistricting shakeup. State Senator Blake Miguez, who denies the allegation, is weighing his options following the Supreme Court's Callais v. Louisiana decision that forced the state to redraw congressional districts. The controversy has cast a shadow over his campaign as he seeks to re-secure the president's backing.
Background of the Rape Accusation
In 2007, a police report was filed accusing Miguez of rape, though no charges were ever brought. The Atlantic reported that Miguez did not disclose this to Trump's team before receiving the initial endorsement. Miguez's campaign has maintained his innocence, but the timing of the revelation—just before a postponed primary—has raised questions.

Trump's Evolving Stance
A White House spokesperson clarified that Trump has not formally rescinded his endorsement but added that the president will revisit the field after candidate qualifying. "If new information changes things, we will cross that bridge when we get to it," the spokesperson said. Miguez hopes to earn Trump's endorsement again as he decides which district to run in.
Redistricting and Campaign Strategy
The Supreme Court's Callais decision required Louisiana to redraw its U.S. House districts, nullifying the previous map under which Miguez had Trump's endorsement. Miguez now considers running in one of two districts—neither of which he lives in, but both are legally open to him. The May 16 primary was postponed to November, giving him more time to strategize.
Comparison of District Options
| District | Leaning | Incumbent |
|---|---|---|
| District 3 | Safe Republican | Open (retiring) |
| District 5 | Safe Republican | Incumbent running |
Both districts are heavily Republican, but Miguez's chances may depend on Trump's active support. A poll shows that with Trump's endorsement, Miguez leads in both districts by double digits. Without it, the race tightens significantly.
