Smart Glasses Threat: Police Fear Secret Recording by Criminals 2026

US police departments are increasingly worried that Meta smart glasses could be used to secretly record officers, facilities, and operations, creating new security and counterintelligence challenges. The concern escalated after a New York Police Department memo warned about the potential misuse of Ray-Ban Meta glasses in detention centers.

Why Police Fear Smart Glasses

The NYPD memo, issued in January, directed officers to inspect all eyewear in inmate cells, citing the risk that arrested individuals could use the glasses to record inside police facilities. The memo highlighted videos posted on social media that offered a peek into detention centers, raising alarms about exposing cell layouts, camera placements, and patrol routines.

Covert Recording Risks

Law enforcement agencies from Maine to California have expressed concerns that smart glasses could be used to secretly record officers or aid in crimes and terrorism. The ability to capture high-quality video discreetly makes these devices a double-edged sword, beneficial for transparency but risky for security.

Key Takeaways for Law Enforcement

• Implement strict policies on eyewear in secure areas.
