The Schoolgirl Terrorist? documentary review reveals a chilling and deeply disturbing portrait of institutional failure. This television review examines how a 15-year-old girl became the youngest person charged with terror offences in the UK, and how the system meant to protect her instead contributed to her tragic end.
The Story of Rhianan Rudd: A Kafkaesque Nightmare
The documentary, airing on UK television, opens with the question that haunts the entire narrative: was Rhianan Rudd a terrorist, or a vulnerable child failed by everyone around her? The film meticulously traces her life from a troubled childhood to her arrest in 2020. Her mother, Emily, and brother, Brandon, describe a girl with undiagnosed autism and severe mental health issues, who often invented alternate personalities. Social services were involved from an early age, yet the family received little effective help.

The Role of Social Services and the New Boyfriend
When Emily’s new boyfriend, Dax Mallaburn, an ex-member of a right-wing gang, moved in after being approved by social services, the situation worsened. During lockdown, Rhianan was given a computer in her room, and online radicalization took hold. The documentary does not shy away from the systemic failures that allowed a vulnerable child to slip through every safety net.
Legal and Ethical Questions Raised
The film raises urgent questions about the UK’s terror laws and the treatment of minors. Rhianan was charged at 15, and her case was later dropped posthumously. The review highlights how the documentary forces viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about justice, mental health, and accountability.
Documentary Review: Strengths and Weaknesses
The Schoolgirl Terrorist? is a masterclass in investigative journalism, but it is also an emotionally exhausting watch. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the horror to unfold slowly. However, some critics may find the lack of direct interviews with Rhianan herself (due to her death) a limitation. The use of home videos and family testimonies adds a raw, personal dimension that is both moving and devastating.
