Zohran Mamdani has urged the US federal government to arrest Netanyahu if the Israeli prime minister visits the United States later this year. The New York City mayor acknowledged he lacks authority to enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant but called on Washington to act. “Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal,” Mamdani said in a video, citing the ICC’s 2024 arrest warrant over alleged war crimes.
Mamdani’s Call for Federal Action
In a statement posted to social media, Mamdani confirmed his administration reviewed all legal avenues but found New York City cannot independently execute the ICC warrant. “The federal government, however, does – and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant,” he added. Mamdani declared Netanyahu “not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large.” Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York in September for the UN General Assembly.

Legal and Political Reactions
Former President Donald Trump quickly rebuked Mamdani, insisting Netanyahu “will not be arrested” on US soil. Trump argued Netanyahu is “fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran” and criticized those he blamed for Iran’s actions. The US does not recognize the ICC’s authority, creating a legal standoff between Mamdani’s moral stance and federal policy.
