Nature-friendly farming has delivered an unexpected reward: a record-breaking covey of 26 grey partridges on our farm. This sighting is a testament to years of dedicated conservation efforts and sustainable practices.

Sometimes a moment of surprise has years of experience behind it. Last week, while applying a cocktail of microbe food (molasses, humates, and fish paste) to our oilseed rape fields, I was startled by a large flock of grey partridges—a covey of 26. Twelve would be considered large, and red-legged partridges typically appear only in pairs, but I’ve never seen 26 grey partridges here in my lifetime.

Nature-Friendly Farming Practices That Made It Possible

This achievement is a direct result of our nature-friendly approach to farming. We’ve implemented several key strategies to support wildlife and soil health.

Creating a Mosaic of Habitats

We plant specific margins to encourage insects like sawfly larvae, crickets, weevils, and ground beetles. These insects form the entire diet of grey partridge chicks (and yellowhammers) during their first two weeks of life. Additionally, we plant overwinter cover crops and “catch” crops to mop up loose nutrients and protect the soil. This year, we added millet, the seed of which boosts older birds. The goal is to create a mosaic of habitats that connect through the landscape.

Companion Crops for Natural Defense

After a decent drop of rain (almost 100mm in three weeks), we started drilling cash crops, beginning with oilseed rape (OSR) and three companion crops that provide natural defense. We plant berseem clover, which provides nitrogen for the OSR; buckwheat, which scavenges phosphate from the soil and makes it bio-available to the cash crop through root exudates; and other beneficial plants. This reduces the need for synthetic inputs and fosters a healthier ecosystem.

Comparing Conventional and Nature-Friendly Farming

The differences between conventional and nature-friendly farming are stark. Here’s a quick comparison:

Aspect Conventional Farming Nature-Friendly Farming
Biodiversity Low; monocultures dominate High; diverse habitats support wildlife
Soil Health Relies on synthetic fertilizers Builds organic matter and microbial life
Pest Control Chemical pesticides Natural predators and companion planting
Wildlife Fewer species; declining populations Thriving populations, like our partridges

Key Takeaways for Sustainable Agriculture

  • Diverse habitats are crucial for supporting beneficial insects and birds.
  • Companion crops can reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Cover crops prevent nutrient loss and improve soil structure.
  • Patience and observation are key—results may take years to manifest.

These practices not only benefit wildlife but also enhance crop resilience and farm productivity. The record partridge covey is proof that nature-friendly farming works.

FAQ

What is nature-friendly farming?

Nature-friendly farming is an approach that integrates biodiversity conservation with food production. It uses practices like planting wildflower margins, cover crops, and companion crops to support wildlife and soil health while reducing chemical inputs.

How do cover crops help partridges?

Cover crops like millet provide seeds that are a food source for adult partridges. They also attract insects, which are essential for chicks during their first weeks of life. This creates a supportive habitat for the birds.

What are companion crops and why are they used?

Companion crops are plants grown alongside cash crops to provide benefits such as nitrogen fixation (e.g., berseem clover) or nutrient mobilization (e.g., buckwheat). They reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers and enhance soil health.

Our experience shows that nature-friendly farming can lead to remarkable outcomes. By creating a mosaic of habitats and using companion crops, we’ve not only seen a record number of partridges but also improved our farm’s resilience. It’s a win-win for agriculture and the environment.
