The Gatwick water supply failure on Sunday left passengers without working toilets, hot drinks, or handwashing facilities. The outage, caused by a problem at SES Water's Bough Beech treatment works, affected both terminals and sparked widespread frustration on social media.

TalkTV presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer posted on X, warning travelers: "No running water across the entire airport. No coffees, no water fountains, no flushing toilets and no hand washing." Social media users echoed her frustration, with one Facebook user writing: "Gasping for a drink and crossing my legs right now."
How SES Water Responded
SES Water issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and confirming that Bough Beech water treatment works had resumed operations by 2pm. However, the company noted that water needed to be treated before normal service could be fully restored.
The utility thanked Gatwick Airport and customers for their patience. Meanwhile, the airport arranged contingency measures including bottled water for passengers and staff, but flights were not affected.
Impact on Airport Operations
Gatwick explained that the water issue originated in the Horley area and was under investigation. While restaurants and bars were shuttered, the main terminals remained open and flights continued as scheduled. The airport advised travelers to bring their own water and use facilities before arriving.
| Area Affected | Service Impact |
|---|---|
| Both terminals | No running water; toilets, restaurants, bars closed |
| Surrounding postcodes (TN11, RH1, RH6, RH10) | Interrupted water supply from SES Water |
| Flights | No disruptions reported |
