Alternative Leathers: Are Vegan Fabrics Better for the Environment

Alternative leathers made from mushrooms, cactus, and other plants are often touted as eco-friendly solutions in sustainable fashion. But are they truly better for the environment? While these innovative materials promise to reduce the fashion industry's reliance on animal leather and fossil fuels, experts warn they may be more of a distraction than a solution.

The Rise of Alternative Leathers

In the quest for sustainable fashion, breathless promises about vegan leather have arrived thick and fast for over a decade. Innovations promise mushroom and cactus alternatives that look and feel like real leather – minus the negative associations with methane, deforestation, chemical pollution, and animal welfare. These next-gen materials have absorbed billions of dollars in capital under an environmental banner, yet experts are concerned they remain a shiny distraction while the fashion industry’s emissions and reliance on fossil fuel-derived materials grows.

“Apple leather, orange leather, pineapple leather, fruit salad leather. It’s like, seriously do we really have to call it leather?” says Dr Helen Crowley, founder of Nature Matters, who spent a decade leading nature and sustainable sourcing for luxury conglomerate Kering. “I haven’t yet seen an alternative leather become an alternative, I’ve seen it just added to the portfolio. It’s about more variety and more stories to sell more stuff.”

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Leather

According to Textile Exchange, global production of raw hides used in traditional leather – a co-product of the meat industry – has increased steadily over the last two decades from 10.5m tonnes in 2005 to 13.8m tonnes in 2024. It’s evidence that despite the time and money spent on new materials, and endless campaigns by animal rights activists, alternatives to leather have failed to slow the growth of the leather industry.

Traditional leather production is associated with significant environmental issues, including methane emissions from livestock, deforestation for grazing land, and chemical pollution from tanning processes. However, because leather is a by-product of the meat industry, its environmental footprint is often allocated to meat production, making it difficult to assess independently.

Are Alternative Leathers Really Eco-Friendly?

Many alternative leathers are marketed as biodegradable and made from renewable resources. But the reality is more complex. Most vegan leathers currently on the market are made from polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which are derived from fossil fuels and are not biodegradable. Even plant-based leathers often use synthetic binders and coatings to achieve the desired look and feel, compromising their eco-friendliness.

Moreover, the production of these materials can be energy-intensive and involve toxic chemicals. For example, mushroom leather (made from mycelium) requires a controlled environment and significant processing. Cactus leather, while requiring less water than traditional livestock, still involves chemical treatments to convert the plant material into a leather-like substance.

Comparison of Leather Alternatives

Material Base Resource Biodegradable Fossil Fuel Use Environmental Concerns
Traditional Leather Animal hides Yes (untreated) Low Methane, deforestation, chemical pollution
PU/PVC Leather Fossil fuels No High Non-renewable, toxic chemicals
Mushroom Leather Mycelium Partially Medium Energy-intensive processing, synthetic binders
Cactus Leather Cactus plants Partially Medium Chemical treatments, limited scalability

Key Takeaways

  • Alternative leathers are often not as eco-friendly as marketed, with many containing fossil fuel-derived materials.
  • Traditional leather production continues to grow, driven by the meat industry, despite the rise of alternatives.
  • Experts caution that alternative leathers may be adding to consumption rather than replacing conventional leather.
  • Truly sustainable fashion requires reducing overall consumption and embracing circular economy principles.

The Need for Systemic Change

While alternative leathers can play a role in reducing animal suffering, they are not a silver bullet for the fashion industry’s environmental problems. The sector must address its reliance on fossil fuels, reduce overproduction, and invest in truly circular solutions. As Dr Crowley notes, “We need to stop selling more stuff and start selling better stuff.”

Consumers can also make a difference by buying less, choosing durable products, and supporting brands that are transparent about their supply chains. Without systemic change, alternative leathers risk being just another marketing tool in the fast-fashion playbook.

FAQ

Are alternative leathers better for the environment than real leather?

Not necessarily. While alternative leathers avoid animal cruelty, many are made from fossil fuel-derived materials like PU and PVC, which are not biodegradable and contribute to pollution. Even plant-based leathers often use synthetic binders and require energy-intensive processing. The environmental impact depends on the specific material and production methods.

What is the most eco-friendly leather alternative?

There is no perfect eco-friendly leather alternative yet. Mushroom and cactus leathers are promising but still face challenges with scalability and chemical processing. The most sustainable option is to reduce consumption, choose durable products, and support brands that prioritize circularity and transparency.

Why are alternative leathers not slowing down traditional leather production?

Alternative leathers are often added to fashion portfolios as additional options rather than replacing traditional leather. The growing demand for leather products, driven by population growth and rising affluence, means overall production continues to rise. Without addressing overconsumption, alternatives alone cannot reduce the environmental impact of the leather industry.
