France Wildfires: 250,000 Evacuated as Blazes Rage 2026

The catastrophic France wildfires have driven more than 250,000 people from their homes across Spain and France, marking one of the largest peacetime evacuations in European history. Authorities in both nations are deploying military resources, including the Airbus A400M Atlas cargo plane, to combat the flames as heatwaves and climate change intensify the crisis.

Unprecedented Evacuations in France and Spain

In France, approximately 197,000 residents fled the Gironde region, including tens of thousands from the wine city of Bordeaux. Spain declared its first-ever national emergency over a wildfire, evacuating 70,000 people from central provinces. High winds in Spain caused three separate blazes to merge, overwhelming firefighting crews.

Emergency Response and Military Deployment

France's interior minister confirmed the deployment of 1,800 firefighters, 19 aircraft, and 1,500 soldiers. The government rushed 1.5 million face masks to protect evacuees from smoke inhalation. Trenches and retardants are being used to slow the fires, but strong winds push flames closer to Bordeaux's western suburbs.
