The world chess championship match is set to make history as Geneva, Switzerland, hosts the youngest title battle ever, with reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju defending against challenger Javokhir Sindarov. Fide announced the selection on Tuesday, confirming the best‑of‑14‑games match will run from 25 November to 15 December. Both players will be 20 years old, marking the first time two teenagers have contested the crown since the championship began in 1886.
Why Geneva Was Chosen for the World Chess Championship Match
Several countries, including India, the United States, and Cyprus, expressed interest before Fide opted for the Swiss city. Fide interim president Viswanathan Anand explained, “After carefully considering all the proposals, Fide has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historic tradition of bringing nations and cultures together.” The Swiss Chess Federation called it a landmark moment for chess in Switzerland, which last hosted a world championship match in 2004, when Vladimir Kramnik defeated Peter Leko in Brissago.

The Youngest Challenger and Champion Duo
Javokhir Sindarov earned his spot by winning the Candidates tournament in Cyprus with a round to spare. The Uzbek grandmaster finished unbeaten with six wins and seven draws from 13 games, securing first place after a 58‑move draw with Anish Giri. His performance underscored the accelerating shift toward a younger generation at the top of the game. The eight‑man tournament had been billed as a potential last stand for established elite players like Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, but neither mounted a sustained challenge.
