Donald Trump has confirmed his attendance at the Geopolitics World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, taking a starting role in the bigliest occasion of all. The US president will be at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, potentially alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the trophy presentation. This marks a significant escalation from his previous cameo appearances, including the controversial Copa Gianni final last year.
Trump's Impact on the Geopolitics World Cup
The White House announcement has stirred debate about presidential involvement in global sports events. Trump's earlier phone call to FIFA lobbying for a review of Folarin Balogun's red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina reversed the suspension, crushing the integrity of the competition according to critics. His presence at the final promises further drama.

Previous Controversies at Major Sporting Events
During last year's Copa Gianni final at the same venue, Trump and Infantino handed the trophy to Reece James after Chelsea's victory over Paris Saint-Germain. While Infantino tried to vacate the stage, Trump stayed superglued to his position, celebrating between Robert Sánchez and a clearly bemused Cole Palmer. "I was a bit confused," Palmer said. The boos rang out for Trump then, as they did at Madison Square Garden when he watched the New York Knicks' sole loss during the NBA finals in June.
| Event | Trump's Role | Public Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Copa Gianni Final | Trophy presenter | Mixed boos and cheers |
| NBA Finals at MSG | Spectator | Loud boos |
| 2025 GWC Final | Confirmed attendee | Anticipated hostility |
Key Takeaways from the Final Matchup
- Spain vs. Argentina features Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, 19 years after their first photoshoot together in 2007.
- Trump's presence may overshadow the sporting action, with potential podium photo opportunities.
- FIFA President Infantino is expected to manage the trophy ceremony carefully to avoid controversy.
What to Watch For on Sunday
Fans hope that regardless of the result, Messi and Yamal come together for a few pics on the podium. Those pictures from 2007 are doing the rounds again, of a 20-year-old Messi cradling a baby Yamal for a charity photoshoot. It is just ridiculous, isn't it? The contrast between Trump's political theater and football's timeless moments will define this final.
