DIY Wooden Bas-Relief: Tools, Techniques & Examples

Bas-relief is a wood carving technique (also used on marble and stone) that is created on the surface of a material block. The term "bas-relief" means "raised contrast" because it gives the perception of three dimensions. Achieving good results with this technique is not difficult, but it requires patience and precision. Start with a board of soft or medium-hard wood (larch, cypress, pear, linden, etc.) several centimeters thick, with compact grain, no knots or cracks, and seasoned for at least two years.

The board must be planed flat to highlight the grain direction and establish the exact position of the design. Trace the design on tracing paper, then transfer it onto the piece using carbon paper for easy-to-follow markings with gouges and wood chisels.

Bas-Relief – What You Need

  • Medium-hard wood board
  • Chisels: 3, 5, 8, and 14 mm
  • Gouges: semicircular 10 mm and 15 mm, one nearly flat 12 mm, one spoon gouge 6 mm, a set of finishing gouges
  • Rasps of various shapes and sizes
  • Wooden mallet

If you have a mini drill with a flexible shaft, you can create inlays and bas-reliefs by mounting a chisel bit and alternating different dedicated router bits. For a complete workshop setup, explore our home improvement collection for essential tools.

Bas-Relief – The Technique

After transferring the bas-relief profile onto the board with carbon paper (in our case, two parrots), start removing wood portions outside the figures using a narrow chisel. The chisel angle is important: holding it almost vertical removes less material but avoids over-removal; holding it at an angle works faster.

With a chisel or a slightly curved gouge, open a channel around the outline, starting from the area to be removed and directing the tool outward. Work gradually, deepening the background while leaving the figures raised. For intricate details, use smaller gouges and rasps. A good task light will help you see the grain and shadows clearly.

Shaping the Relief

Once the outline is defined, begin shaping the figures themselves. Use a spoon gouge for concave details like feathers or leaves, and a flat chisel for flat surfaces. The depth of the relief should vary: deeper cuts near the edges of the figures create stronger contrast. Always work with the grain to avoid splintering. Consider adding a wall decor piece to your space for inspiration on design layouts.

Sanding and Finishing

After carving, sand the surface starting with coarse grit (80) and progressing to fine grit (220). Remove dust with a tack cloth. Apply a wood finish like linseed oil or wax to protect the wood and enhance the grain. A soft rug under your workbench can help catch wood shavings and keep your workspace clean.

FAQ

What type of wood is best for bas-relief?

Soft to medium-hard woods like linden, pear, or cypress are ideal because they carve smoothly without excessive hardness. Avoid woods with large knots or cracks. You can find suitable wood blanks at your local lumberyard or through home improvement suppliers.

Can I use power tools for bas-relief?

DIY project photo
Yes, a mini drill with a flexible shaft and carving bits can speed up the process, especially for deep background removal and fine details. However, hand tools offer more control for beginners. Pair your carving station with a sturdy work surface for stability.

How do I transfer a design onto wood?

Draw your design on tracing paper, then place carbon paper (graphite side down) between the tracing paper and the wood. Trace over the lines with a pencil or stylus. You can also use a bright light source to backlight the tracing for easier transfer.

What safety equipment do I need?

Always wear cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask when carving and sanding. A complete safety kit is a wise investment for any woodworking project.

How long does a bas-relief project take?

Depending on complexity and size, a small bas-relief can take 10–20 hours. Larger or more detailed pieces may take several weekends. Patience is key. Display your finished work on a wall-mounted shelf or within a bookcase for a stunning personal touch.
