DIY Wooden Gate: Build a Stunning Double Gate for Your Home Entrance

“Those two columns at the entrance of my house were missing something!” That was the cry of alarm that drove our reader Fabrizio to build a DIY wooden double gate, both as a finishing touch and as protection for his entryway. He crafted all the pieces from seasoned reclaimed wooden planks.

The height and width of the DIY wooden gate depend on the opening you have available. Here, each leaf has eight vertical slats, routed for beauty and to avoid sharp edges; they are of different lengths, tapering toward the sides to create an arch. The slats, spaced 30 mm apart, are fixed with brass screws to a frame whose stiles and rails are joined with mortise-and-tenon joints. The frame is reinforced by a second bracing frame: two diagonals shaped at the ends and joined at the center with a half-lap joint. The top rail of each leaf’s frame is covered with a thinner strip to protect the wood from the weather and prevent water infiltration on the end grain. The right center stile has a mortise for the lock, with handles salvaged from an old door. The center slat of the left leaf serves as the stop. On the side stiles, mortises are cut for sturdy hinges. The hinges are set into recesses cut into the columns (plastered and whitewashed), securing the gate with wedges and shims. The finished DIY wooden gate is painted with three coats of dark walnut wood stain.

The Frame

The frame of each leaf is solid and robust thanks to mortise-and-tenon joints and the two diagonal braces, also joined at the center, which make it warp-proof. For convenience, start with identical slats for the verticals, rout and round the top profile; then cut the already-worked slats at the base to create the curved top profile. A flexible strip bent into an arc with a cord serves as a template.

To cut the tenon on the frame stile, use a tenon saw, which allows precise horizontal and vertical cuts along pencil lines. Finish irregularities with files or rasps to make the tenon accurate and square for a good fit; the clearance between tenon and mortise should be minimal, just enough to hold a little glue. The mortise, corresponding to the tenon, is carefully chiseled out.

Before assembly, sand all parts smooth. Apply wood glue to the mortise-and-tenon joints and clamp the frame together. Check for squareness with a carpenter’s square. Once the frame is assembled, attach the vertical slats using brass screws, pre-drilling pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood. For a professional look, countersink the screw heads and cover them with wood plugs.

Materials and Tools You’ll Need

  • Seasoned wooden planks (reclaimed or new) for slats and frame
  • Brass screws
  • Wood glue
  • Router with a rounding bit
  • Tenon saw or table saw
  • Chisels
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Dark walnut wood stain
  • Paintbrush or sprayer
  • Hinges, lock, and handles
  • Flexible strip and cord for template

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Measure Your Opening

Measure the width and height of your entrance. Decide on the number of slats per leaf and their spacing (here, 30 mm apart). Allow for the frame thickness when calculating slat lengths.

2. Cut and Shape the Slats

Cut all slats to the same initial length. Use a router to round over the top edges. Then, cut each slat at the base to create the curved arch profile, using the flexible strip as a guide.

3. Build the Frame

Cut the stiles and rails to size. Cut mortises in the stiles and tenons on the rail ends. Dry-fit the joints, then glue and clamp the frame. Add the diagonal braces with half-lap joints at the center.

4. Attach the Slats

Position the slats on the frame, maintaining even spacing. Drill pilot holes and fasten with brass screws. Countersink and plug if desired.

5. Install Hardware

Cut mortises for the hinges on the side stiles and for the lock on the right center stile. Attach the hinges to the gate, then set them into the columns using wedges and shims. Install the handles.

6. Finish the Gate

Sand the entire gate smooth. Apply three coats of dark walnut wood stain, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly. Optionally, add a clear sealer for extra protection.

FAQ

How long does it take to build a DIY wooden gate?

For an experienced DIYer, building a double wooden gate like this can take a weekend (about 2-3 days) including drying time for glue and stain. Beginners should allow extra time for learning techniques.

What type of wood is best for an outdoor wooden gate?

Hardwoods like oak, cedar, or teak are ideal for outdoor gates due to their natural resistance to rot and insects. Reclaimed wood can also work if it’s properly seasoned and treated. For a budget-friendly option, pressure-treated pine is a good choice.

Do I need special tools to build a wooden gate?

Basic woodworking tools such as a saw, router, chisels, clamps, and a drill are sufficient. A tenon saw or table saw helps with precise joinery. If you don’t have a router, you can skip the routed edges, but they add a nice touch.

How do I maintain a wooden gate?

Reapply wood stain or sealer every 2-3 years to protect against moisture and UV damage. Check hinges and screws annually for tightness. Clean the gate with a mild soap and water solution as needed.

Can I build a wooden gate without mortise-and-tenon joints?

Yes, you can use simpler joinery like pocket screws or metal brackets, but mortise-and-tenon joints provide superior strength and durability, especially for a heavy gate.

Enhance Your Outdoor Space

Once your DIY wooden gate is complete, consider complementing it with other outdoor improvements. A sturdy gate deserves a well-designed entryway. Browse our outdoor patio furniture to create a welcoming seating area near the entrance. Add outdoor lighting to highlight your new gate and improve security at night. For a cohesive look, coordinate with outdoor decor such as planters or wall art. If you’re also working on landscaping, check out our garden supplies for tools and accessories. And don’t forget home improvement essentials for any other projects around the house.

For the gate itself, you might want to upgrade your hardware. Explore our mirrors and wall decor for interior touches, but for outdoor storage, consider storage benches that double as seating. If you plan to add a covered area, our pergolas and gazebos are perfect for creating shade. And for those who love outdoor cooking, a BBQ grill makes every gathering special.

Inside the home, your new gate can inspire a rustic theme. Pair it with dining tables made of reclaimed wood or sofas with natural linen upholstery. For the bedroom, choose beds that echo the warm wood tones. Complete the look with rugs and curtains in earthy colors.
