Insulate Pipes with a Zipper Closure: A Practical DIY Guide

Heating and hot water pipes, especially metal ones, lose a huge amount of energy if they aren't well insulated. Simply fitting an insulating cover can cut heat loss by up to 50%. One of the most practical and complete systems for putting a 'coat' on your pipes – even those already installed – uses an innovative zipper-like closure.

Why Use a Zipper Closure System for Pipe Insulation?

This method, often found under the brand Climasnap, is useful because it combines the excellent insulating properties of closed-cell extruded polyethylene foam (soft, CFC and HCFC-free) with a unique interlocking closure. This allows you to fit it around existing pipes without having to cut the insulation lengthwise. It’s available for nine pipe sizes: 12, 15, 18, 22, 28, 35, 42, 48, and 60 mm, all with a wall thickness of 15 mm. The thermal conductivity is very low, just 0.045 W/m°K. Once closed, the interlocking joints become practically invisible and need no adhesive to stay in place.

For a complete home improvement project, you'll want to seal the end joints. For that, you can use liquid adhesive (Climacoll) or self-adhesive vinyl tape (Climatape) to seal the areas without the interlock. For hard-to-reach spots and repairs, a self-adhesive foam tape (Climaband) is available.

How to Insulate a Straight Pipe with a Zipper System

To make it easy to find the right size and amount of insulation, the product brochure often includes a cardboard template with semi-circular cutouts. You simply measure the pipe diameter with the template and calculate the total length with a tape measure.

  • Step 1: Measure your pipe’s diameter using the template or a caliper.
  • Step 2: Measure the total length of pipe you need to cover.
  • Step 3: Open the zipper closure and wrap the insulation around the pipe.
  • Step 4: Press the interlocking edges together until they click shut.
  • Step 5: Seal any butt joints with the recommended tape or adhesive.

While you’re working on your garden supplies and outdoor areas, don’t forget that insulating pipes in your shed or basement is just as important as maintaining your outdoor patio furniture.

How to Insulate a Curved Pipe (Elbow)

A practical way to cover bends is to measure the curve’s radius. For very tight curves (under 2 cm), a single 90° notch is enough. For radii between 2 and 5 cm, you’ll need two 45° notches. For curves over 5 cm, you can use multiple smaller notches or a flexible insulation strip.

Proper insulation can make your outdoor heating more efficient and protect your BBQ grills and outdoor cooking supplies from freezing temperatures.

How to Insulate a T-Junction

For T-junctions, you’ll need to cut the insulation to fit around the branch. Measure the main pipe and the branch pipe separately. Cut the insulation for the main pipe, then create a matching cutout for the branch. Use the same interlocking closure or tape to secure all pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I install this insulation on pipes that are already in place?

Yes, that’s the main advantage of the zipper closure system. You don’t need to cut the insulation lengthwise or disconnect the pipe. Just open the closure and wrap it around.

What tools do I need for the installation?

You’ll need a tape measure, a utility knife or scissors for cutting the insulation, and possibly a template for measuring pipe diameter. No special tools are required for the closure itself.

Is this insulation suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, the closed-cell polyethylene foam is resistant to moisture and UV light, making it suitable for outdoor pipes. For extra protection, you can cover it with a weatherproof tape.

Adding insulation to your pipes is a simple way to save energy and protect your home. While you’re at it, consider updating your lighting or adding some wall decor to make your space more comfortable and efficient.

How do I measure the pipe diameter without a template?

You can use a caliper or a piece of string. Wrap the string around the pipe, measure the length, and divide by π (3.14) to get the diameter. Then choose the closest standard size.
