Firefox will allow disabling all AI features with one setting 2026

Mozilla is preparing a new artificial intelligence kill switch for Firefox, giving users the ability to disable all of the browser's AI‑powered features with a single setting.

The feature will first appear in Firefox Nightly builds, and then will be available to everyone on February 24, along with the release of Firefox 148.

The move comes at a time when many AI-powered browsers are adding more and more automated tools, whether users ask for them or not. In the case of Firefox, the use of AI remains optional: users can take advantage of these features if they want to, but are not required to keep them active.

Firefox already has several AI features, and the new controls bring them together in one central place in the settings. Enabling AI blocking disables chatbots in the Firefox sidebar, as well as on-device tools for translating web pages, "smart" tab grouping, highlighting key points in link previews, and adding accessibility descriptions to images within PDFs.

At the same time, the setting does not remove control from the user. Individual functions can be turned on or off individually, instead of being turned off all at once. Thus, anyone who wishes can keep certain tools active, while disabling the rest.

Mozilla says the master switch also stops any relevant prompts and reminders linked to AI features across the browser. Doing so means no pop-ups recommending chatbot testing or encouraging experimentation with AI tools at a later time.

According to the company, if the user selectively resets some AI functions, the preferences he sets will remain in effect even after browser updates. In this way, Firefox aims to keep the choices the user has made stable, without undoing them with a future upgrade.

In November, the Mozilla Foundation also announced an upcoming AI Window, a separate space where users will be able to access their preferred chatbots and agents. This feature is currently only available through a waiting list and remains completely optional.
