Ludwig Göransson's score for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is meticulously crafted with ancient instruments, yet many critics find it forgettable. The film's music, while historically fascinating, lacks the emotional punch that makes a score iconic. Let's explore why.
The Research Behind the Score
Göransson, known for his deep dives into source material, reconstructed the ancient aulos and early lyres using research by Oxford professor Armand D'Angour. He avoided traditional orchestral sounds in favor of bronze gongs, metallic strikes, and intimate vocals. This approach creates an earthy, raw soundscape that feels authentic to Homeric Greece.

Why It Falls Flat
Despite the craftsmanship, the score lacks memorable melodies. Nolan's past collaborators like Hans Zimmer produced themes that linger (e.g., Inception's "Time"). In contrast, Göransson's work here blends into the background. A 2026 Vanity Fair article quoted Nolan wanting a "recognisable world but not one encountered before" – but recognisability without emotional resonance leads to forgettability.
Comparison with Other Film Scores
| Film | Composer | Memorable Theme | Audience Recall |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Odyssey (2026) | Ludwig Göransson | No clear motif | Low |
| Inception (2010) | Hans Zimmer | "Time" | Very High |
| The White Ribbon (2009) | None (diegetic only) | N/A | N/A |
Key Takeaways
- Göransson used reconstructed ancient instruments for authenticity.
- The score lacks a strong, repeatable melody.
- Nolan's direction prioritized atmosphere over hook.
- Critics compare it unfavorably to Zimmer's iconic scores.
- The music fits the film but doesn't elevate it.
FAQ
Is The Odyssey's score historically accurate?
Yes, Ludwig Göransson worked with classicists to reconstruct ancient Greek instruments like the aulos and lyre, making the sound world unique.
Why did Nolan avoid using an orchestra?
He wanted a fresh, unfamiliar auditory experience that matched the ancient setting, so he asked Göransson to experiment with non-orchestral sounds.
How does this score compare to Hans Zimmer's work with Nolan?
Zimmer's themes are emotionally resonant and easily remembered, while Göransson's score is more atmospheric and less distinctive in melody.
