Andy Burnham faces tough climate decisions as he stands on the threshold of becoming Britain's next prime minister amid devastating heatwaves and wildfires. The former Greater Manchester mayor has remained quiet on the climate crisis, but the urgency is undeniable with three UK heatwaves this year killing thousands and damaging harvests. This article examines Burnham's green policy challenges and what they mean for the nation's future.
Andy Burnham's Climate Stance So Far
Chris Venables, an environmental campaigner at the Green Alliance thinktank, notes that Burnham has been very quiet about the climate crisis so far. However, this does not necessarily mean he will weaken the agenda. The appointment of Ed Miliband as chancellor could signal a major boost for low-carbon economic growth, though rivals suggest home secretary Shabana Mahmood may take that role instead.

Heatwave Impacts on the UK Economy
The May and June heatwaves killed approximately 2,700 people and cost UK businesses at least £2.4 billion in lost productivity. A fourth poor harvest since 2020 would further hurt farmers and consumers. If a fossil fuel-driven 'super El Niño' strikes, food prices will soar even higher.
| Climate Impact | Measured Effect |
|---|---|
| Heatwave deaths (May-June) | ~2,700 |
| Business productivity loss | £2.4 billion |
| Poor harvests since 2020 | 4 |
