Build an inexpensive stone path for your garden, featuring a walkway that branches from the main entrance and winds down the side of the house to the backyard. To give it a rustic look, we are using flagstones for the path and pavers for a border. The path will be in a low traffic area and we want it to blend in with the grass and garden plantings, so we have designed it with wide grass joints between the stones.
Build a stone path for your garden

There are many types of building stone available, so it is important to choose one suitable for the walkway you want to create. You also want to choose stone that complements your garden and home. In this project, we are using a rough cut slab for a rustic, random look appropriate for your garden and lawn.
When purchasing stone for a walkway or any other construction project, keep these criteria in mind:
- Climate: If winters are cold where you live, use dense stones such as granite, bluestone or quartzite that can withstand sub-zero temperatures.
- Style: Use stone that suits the architectural style of your home.
- Function: A random, widely spaced stone path, like the walkway we are creating, is best suited for gardens or side paths through lawns or in backyards.
Finished Projects:

Procedure
Step 1: Take Measurements and Order Materials
Calculate the square footage of the walkway area to estimate the quantities of material you will need.
First, determine the approximate width of your path, then multiply that number by the length of the walkway, which will give you the total square footage.
Your stone supplier should be able to provide the correct amount of materials based on your figures.

Step 2: Design the walkway
Start by placing the flagstones on top of the grass to check the spacing
Arrange the pieces to make the path look natural, and rearrange the stones as necessary for a random balance of color and shape.
As a general rule, place two smaller pieces of slab adjacent to each large one.
Walk on the stones to see if they are stable and spaced to accommodate comfortable walking.

Step 3: Prepare the base of the driveway
Use a garden trowel or spade to cut the grass around each stone.
You should only penetrate the root layer of grass and turf, an inch or two deep, at this point. Move away the stones; remove the underlying grass and set it aside for later.
As described below, dig out about four inches of soil for your gravel base, depending on the thickness of each piece of slab.

Step 4: Set and form stones
Add a one-inch-deep layer of loose gravel over the base of the crusher.
Because each stone has a different thickness, adjust the amount of gravel for the correct depth and level.
Use a rubber mallet to tap the stone against the gravel until its surface is level with the surrounding grass surface.

Step 5: Add a Cobblestone Border
First, dig a shallow trench, about six inches wide and six inches deep, on each side of the walkway.
Next, mix the premixed mortar mixture de cement and sand according to the manufacturer's instructions.
For your convenience, prepare enough at a time to stay viable for half an hour or so.

Step 6: Clean and replant grass
Use previously separated pieces of grass to fill any gaps between the flagstones and the surrounding grass. Rake the entire work area, being careful not to disturb the replanted grass.
Wash the stones with a garden hose to remove dirt and help relocate grass.
You can start using the walkway right away, and within a few days the grass will be reestablished and your stone path will look like it's been there for years.
