How to build a beautiful wooden bench around a tree! 2026

How to build a beautiful wooden bench around a tree: The construction geometry of the hexagonal bench is easier than a circular bench, but it provides the same seating comfort and practicality from all sides because it is symmetrical.

Build the bench in sections with legs/brackets spaced apart to avoid tree roots and then assemble around the tree.

Hexagonal bench for your trees

Procedure

1.-Cut the six boards

Plan the dimensions of the hexagonal custom tree bench to encompass the trunk of the tree without damaging it or impeding its growth.

Place the electric miter saw at a 30-degree angle and cut the first row (inner row) of the seat panels.

2.- Cut and measure Outdoor Seat boards

an inner seat board, spaced with 1/4 inch spacers.

On both ends, extend a 30-degree cut line from the first board through the other two.

Cut six sets of inside, middle, and outside planks this way.

3.-Cut, assemble and secure

Construct six tree bench supports with two two-by-six legs sandwiched on top by two one-by-four cross clamps.

Secure them with galvanized carriage bolts, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts with a socket wrench, compressing the wood slightly.

4.-Join by fixing supports

Join two seat sections, drill pilot holes underneath to screw one bracket directly onto the gasket and one on both ends of the assembly.

Make two assemblies, reserving the two remaining individual sections for installation once placed around the tree.

5.-Assembled sections of the vertical screws

Turn the two bench assemblies upright. They are not rigid yet, so drill countersunk pilot holes and screw through the bench top into the cross support clamps below.

The countersunk screw heads will be below the surface and protect clothing.

6.-Level the tree bench

Level the two bench assemblies around the tree, leaving gaps the exact length for the two remaining seat sections.

If necessary, remove soil to level the ground for the tree bench, but avoid the tree roots.

7.- Screw the remaining seat boards

Place the remaining tree bench planks in place. Drill countersunk holes to place the screws through the bench top into the cross support brackets below.

Remember to leave a 1/4 inch gap between boards to allow for wood expansion and water drainage.
