How to Make a Pool Chair 2026

Making an armchair for the pool can be an interesting idea to decorate that home environment with this accessory.

This practical chair is very easy to make and will not take you much time when making it.

Step by step to make a Pool Chair

When I was done, the chairs are very heavy (over 60kg) so help is useful to move them, I was alone and using a sack truck!

Materials to make a pool chair:

• 2m 4×4
• 5m 4×2
• 2m 2×2
• 1 sheet (8’x4′) 10 mm layer
• 10kg tile cement
• 5kg black grout/grout
• 25 kg stones
• 20 x 4″ nails
• 30 x 1″ screws
• PVA adhesive

Tools used:

• Cutting saw
• Skill Saw
• Hammer
• Drill
• Screwdriver
• Squads
• Pencil
• Rule
• Spatula (for cement tiles)
• Sponges
• Old toothbrush (grout)

#1: Cut the legs

• Firstly most measurements are completely arbitrary as they depend on how high you want the chair and what size the seat pads are (mine were 600mm x 460mm x 60mm thick)
• So the first 4 leg cut of the 4×4 mine was 600mm long

#2: Legs and cut

• Cut 2″ wide slots on two sides of each leg 1′ deep, I used the chop saw for this, but you can use a skill saw (circular saw) or chisel as desired

#3: Cut the bottom rails

• Side and back rail are 4x2, front is 2x2, lengths to suit square size (i.e. back rail on mine was 670mm (600 squares + 2x 25mm recess + 10mm each side for tiling)

#4: Assemble the bottom rail

• I nailed it in both directions with 4″ nails, make sure it is square (measure the diagonals)

#5: Cut the top rails

• Made from 4x2 to fit, half lap joints at rear (again done with chop saw)

#6: Adjust the seat base

• As you can see here, I had already put the top rails on, it's much easier to put the base on first - that's bad!
• The base is made of 10mm ply as fitted

#7: Adjust the top rails

• Again all nailed with 4″ nails (fine carpentry skills at work!)

#8: Panel out

• Place panels on all ply surfaces. You can also use 1″ screws to attach them.
• You can use ceramic tiles to cover panels if you want right now and have a nice tile chair - your choice, but cutting them is a pain...

#9: Paint and seal

• I painted the exposed legs, base and back with black enamel (as I had some slackers around), all other surfaces had a watered down PVA wash to seal and help cement adhesion.
• I also smoothed all the corners with a plane as it will make it easier to stick things in!

#10: Tiles

• This is tedious with small pebbles which took hours, luckily we had a 15 hour power outage and I had nothing else to do (it was finished by torch light) doing a small area at a time and grouting at the end.
• If you mix some of the colored grout into the cement, the grout is easier since you don't have to cover every bit of exposed white cement, I wish I had thought of that sooner!
• I used a toothbrush to get the grout, give it a good wash before the cement sets, and another after the grout and polish when finished (a spray of silicon gives it a good shine) and then place the chicks

#11: Sit back and enjoy

• If you wanted, they could be made from pallet wood, I used an old ply that had previously been a floor covering at work and was on a skip, all the other stuff was scraps I had from other projects, you could also save some by making a sneaky collection of beach pebbles)
• Finally each chair took approximately 2 days from start to finish (the second one was a little faster, since I had thought out some of the parts)
