How to spray paint your bike easily

Step 1: Start disassembling the bike

So everything that is attached to the frame must come off. That's the seat, the wheels, the chain, the derailleur, all that. To achieve this you will need:

• Pipe wrench
• Chain tool
• Allen key (4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm)
• Wrench

And to paint yourself, you'll need some spray paint and a clear coat.

• Super strong paint and primer (Blue Krylon Dual)
• Outdoor protector (Krylon Clear Coat)

With those tools, go for it. The fun thing about bikes is that everything you need to remove is pretty clear. That takes care of the brakes, stem bar and bottle cages. Use the socket wrench to remove the crank arms, the half-moon wrench for the front fork, and the chain tool for the bicycle chain.

If you are new to this, be sure to pay attention to all the pieces you remove, as you will have to put them back later. Also, be sure to carefully store all parts away. It's easy to lose a couple of small pieces along the way.

Step 2: Clean it

So now you have the bike frame. Wipe it with something good to get rid of all the grease and dirt.

Step 3: Wash a little

Use some sandpaper to scrape the surface of the old paint. I used 150 grit here, but it could have been even finer. The point is to give the new paint a good surface to hold it on, not to remove all the old paint.

When you are finished, wipe the frame with a damp cloth to collect all the dust.

Step 4: Cover anything you don't want to paint

This bike was in bad shape and the crank arms didn't move at all. So, well, I wasn't going to delete them after all. Which isn't so bad, since it's easy enough to cover them with plastic bags and use tape to keep them tidy and cover the entire crank arm.

In addition to the crank arms, I also covered the brake posts with duct tape.

Step 5: Paint!

Okay, we finally get to painting. Some people recommend hanging the entire frame by running a wire through the head tube and hanging it that way. I didn't have anywhere good to hang the bike in my spot, so I opted to do it on a tarp in two phases.

The first phase was done as in the first photo here, with the frame resting on the seat post opening and rear dropouts. In the second phase, I balanced it with a crank arm and one of the chain rings. It's not elegant or super stable, but it works.

For each painting phase, I applied three coats of Krylon Dual blue spray paint. Just be sure to wait at least 5 minutes between coats. So with two phases, this resulted in the application of 6 separate coats of paint.

After that, I let everything dry overnight before applying 3 coats of Krylon Clear Protector using the same process.

PStep 6: Assemble the Bike

Now it's time to put all the parts back together. If you paid attention and carefully stored all your pieces, this should be quick and easy. If not, it can be a bit annoying.

But that's it, your bike has a new paint job and is ready to ride. Remember that you can easily use any color to paint your bike.
