Learn Easy to Make a Robert van Embricqs Style Table, which was inspired by the great designer Robert Van Embricqs. You can find his work at www.robertvanembricqs.com. I wanted to rebuild his rising table on my own. This is my table version and I want to share it with you...
I hope you like it and enjoy the instructions. Have fun! 🙂
Step 1: Mark and cut the wooden strips

I use 20 wooden strips with a cross section of 2cmx2cm and a length of 100cm. This will result in a round table with a diameter of 40 cm and a height of approximately 45 cm. You can increase the size of the table by adding more strips. Height may be increased by using longer strips.
But we are going to work with the alignment of the 20 strips next to each other. Now in the center of the rectangle, I draw a circle with the diameter of 40 cm. I use a pencil and a string, because I don't have another helpful object, which is big enough.
Now I can draw cutting marks on each strip near the circle. I only need to mark half of the strips, because there is a symmetry on the horizontal axis and I can cut two strips at the same time. Be sure to number the strips. I use the numbers 1 to 20. So I can cut 1 and 20, 2 and 19… And so on simultaneously. I have to cut each strip into three pieces. Make sure you number them all.
Step 2: Milling notches for the hinges

I bought hinges of the same width as the wooden stripes, in my case 2 cm. I want them to fit perfectly into the stripes. Therefore, I use my Router to cut small notches in the stripes. I marked the area with a pencil and used my Router to finish the job...
Well this will take a while, there are 80 notches to cut 🙂
Step 3: Gluing the table

The next step is to join the pieces of the table. You can actually do this later, but I'll do it now, so the glue dries and I can get on with the rest in the meantime. Well, there's not much to say.
I use wood glue to glue the pieces together and clamps to press them down a bit.
Unfortunately I don't have clamps wide enough for all the pieces. That's why I glued the table in two steps. Be sure to align all pieces on the center line and in the correct order.
Step 4: Cutting the slots for the legs

Now comes the difficult part. I want you to paThey are movable. Therefore, I will use a threaded rod that will go through all the legs. All legs, other than the outer ones, need a groove to allow the bar to slide along. To find out the size of the slot, I use masking tape to mount the outer and inner legs to the table top and mark the position of the bar while moving the legs.
I imagine you would need a 5cm to 24cm slot (measured from the bottom of each leg). I use my Router board to cut all the grooves. I use a guide on each side and a tape mark to get the same grooves on each leg. Remember, do not cut off the outside legs.
Step 5: Drilling holes in the outer legs

I'm almost done with the legs. The outside legs will keep the rod in place. Therefore, they need a hole. I use a drill to cut the four holes and trim the edges a little. Remember to place the hole in the exact same positions where you placed the rod a step earlier to mark the slots, or else the slots would no longer fit.
Step 6: Sanding all the pieces

I use a grinder to smooth table surfaces. I move the leg numbers into the notches for the hinges. They cannot be seen further ahead. Now I can smooth the surfaces of the legs too.
Step 7: Apply paint, oil or any other finish

This step is entirely up to you. You can apply any type of finish to your wood. I decided to use a dark colored one to protect the surfaces. Make sure you can still read the numbers on the paws.
Step 8: Time to cut and assemble the hinges

When everything is dry, I can start with my saw. The numbers on the notches will help me find the right leg in the right place. I use my Dremel to make small holes for the screws. Now I can attach the hinges to the table and legs.
Step 9: Trimming the threaded rods

The rods are a little long. I use tape to mark the correct length and use a cutting wheel to trim the rods. I use nuts and washers to hold the legs in place.
Step 10: Ready!

Congratulations, everything is done and hopefully you are a proud owner of a new table... I hope you enjoy building this. Please let me know your experiences and improvements. Comment!
