Learn how to make a shelf with fruit drawers, and get a lot of use out of it as furniture for the house. In this case we will make a modular shelf to use in the kitchen, as a bookcase or even leave it in the living room with plates, glasses or teapots.

Procedure:

It was chosen to make a modular shelf with 9 drawers, but this can be accommodated depending on the space you have and the storage need. We will distribute the 9 drawers into 3 shelves of 2, 3 and 4 boxes. This will help to have different heights and not make the piece of furniture so symmetrical.

Before starting this project it is recommended to remove all splinters and sand the fruit crates to get them ready for the project.

#1. Present the drawers

Before assembly it is necessary to assemble them one above the other, forming the shelf. In our case grouped in 2, 3 and 4 drawers. This will help us take the heights and know the measurements to cut the rear slats that will support the structure.

• The drawers found at the fair may have different measurements, in this case we will cut the 3x1” brushed pine into 2 pairs of 68 cm for the 2-drawer module, 2 cuts of 102 cm for the 3-drawer module, and 2 more pieces of 136 cm for the tallest 4-drawer module.
• We make these cuts with the saw.

#3. Fix the slats

After countersinking the wood, some splinters may come off, so it is advisable to manually sand the place of the fixings.

#4. Paint

• To keep the wood grain visible, we are going to apply a wash, it can be done with any color. We can add more or less amount of paint, depending on the intensity we want. In this case we use 2 measures of gray latex for 1 measure of water.
• Apply with a brush inside and outside of each module. Let dry.

#5. Shelf mobility

Fix 4 wheels for each module, one per corner. They are fixed with ¾” screws.

The wheels that were chosen have several special characteristics. The first thing is that they are made of plastic so they do not damage the floor, they have a rotating base that makes them more mobile and easier to manipulate, in addition to having a brake that allows them to be parked so that the shelf does not move.

#6. Handle

A handle or handle is a complement to the wheels, since it helps move it, otherwise there would be nowhere to grab it. A handle can be placed on each side of the shelf, right in the center of the drawer.
