Make Your Own Wooden Patio Furniture, the sofa is made with meranti boards. I want the furniture to last a long time, so pine was out of the question.

Meranti is much stronger than pine and comes in cream and pink tones, which will look good after the clear varnish is applied.

Step 1: You will need:

The foam for the cushions and backrest is in order and I plan to upholster them in a dark blue denim.
Exterior varnish still needs to be applied in a clear to finish and I will show the finished sofa once everything has been added.

YOU WILL NEED:

• 15 of 20 x 144 x 2400 mm meranti. Cut into: 7 of 600 mm length/2 of 640 mm length/4 of 300 mm length
• 5 of 20 x 94 x 2400 mm meranti. Cut into: 5 x 536mm length/6 x 640mm length
• 1 of 32 x 69 x 1800 mm PAR pine or meranti. Cut to: 6 of 188 mm in length and 1 of 69 x 69 x 1800 mm (pine or mernati)
  Cut to: 4 of 180 mm length
• 4 30 mm cutting screws
• 4 50mm cutting screws
• Sun-proof exterior varnish.
• Brushes

TOOLS:

• Drill
• Countersink drill bit
• Miter saw, jig saw or circular saw.
• Random or orbital sander plus 60, 120, and 240 grit sanding pads
• OPTIONAL: Hole template and accessories.

Step 2: Make the back frame

• Start by assembling the back frame. I want a long outdoor sofa for the patio so I decided to work with the standard 2400mm length which dramatically reduced the amount of cutting that needed to be done. Cut the section as shown in the cut list and diagram above.
• To attach the frame, I used my pockethole template. This is not absolutely necessary, in fact most of the other screws are visible, so if you don't have a pockethole template, just make the butt joints.
• Use a corner or carpenter's square while assembling the sections. I was so sure the meranti would be perfectly straight, but it wasn't and I had to work with a couple of slightly crooked boards and tried to use them where it would be so noticeable.
• Once the frame is completed, you can begin adding the lengths to cover the front of the frame. This is where getting your corners 100% is important. If you don't have square corners, the planks in front will be uneven on the edges. So, double check before you fasten everything together.

Step 3: Assemble the Base

• Now it's time to make the base. Be sure to leave all the best planks for the top and front of the base, as these will be the most visible. Cut the sides and supports according to the cut list and diagram below.
• Use 32 x 69mm PAR pine or meranti blocks to join the double layers of panels on the front, back and sides. In the original design, this was a solid panel, but due to lack of stock I had to make ua modification.
• The blocks are attached at both ends of the front panel, as well as a block just off center, and you will discover why it is mounted off center. Remember to leave a 20mm gap at the end to mount the side panels.
• For the supports below I only used a single strip of meranti. This reduces the cost and is really strong enough. But you can add a double level stand if you need additional support. Add an additional length of 144mm meranti for this.
• Supports are secured across the front, back and seat.

Step 4: Important note

After completing the base and frame, I was unhappy with the height of the back and the width of the front, so I made a small modification to rectify this.

In the original design, the frame was mounted on the base. I removed the frame from the base and secured it to the back of the base.

The new design allows for greater seating and lower back area.

• To compensate for the design modification, 69 x 69 mm blocks were cut to a length of 180 mm. Two blocks were glued together and then attached to the base (from inside and from above). Works like a dream!

Step 5: Assemble and secure the armrests

Now all that's left is to make the armrests. Again, use the cut list and diagram below to assemble.

GOOD TO KNOW:

Corner clamps are useful if you are working on your own.

• The upper parts are bolted onto the front and rear supports.
• The top and bottom slats are fastened first and then the spacing for the center slat is adjusted.

Refinement:

• • I sanded areas to compensate for the bad cut (!) with 60 grit sandpaper and then moved up to 120, before finally sanding everything with 240 grit (fine) sandpaper with my trusty orbit sander.
  • The clear exterior varnish should still be applied to all pieces as well as the underside for maximum protection.
  • I have ordered foam and will be adding high-density foam pads and a medium-density foam backing, all of which I plan to upholster in bull denim.
