Musical Instrument Made of PVC Pipes that Anyone Can Make at Home, this is a great and fun instrument to play. I will give you simple instructions so that anyone can also build their own unique instrument. In mine, there are 3 octaves, plus a C. If you plan everything well, it can be easy to build. Special thanks to Snubby J who first inspired me to build one. I used an ABS tube even though I called it a PVC instrument.
Here's a demo of what it sounds like.
Step 1: Necessary materials

Shown in the photo:
- 2″ ABS/PVC Pipes
- 2″ ABS/PVC elbows
- 2″ ABS/PVC couplings or connections
- Tuner
- Tape measure
- Pipe cutter (a hacksaw will also work, but makes the edges rough)
Not shown in the photo:
- 2×4 and 2×10
- 2 1/2″ inside diameter
- Cement
- Tools and screws
Step 2: The “keyboard”

I used the 2 2x4 cut at about 6 feet to make my keyboard. One section was used for sharps and flats, while the other was used for natural notes.
Use the 2 1/2″ hole to cut pipe holes.
In small spaces, hole centers should be 3 1/2″ apart. On larger gaps, 6 1/2″ apart. If starting on a C, space the holes correctly as shown in the image.
Step 3: Building the foundation

The size of your base will depend on the number of notes you choose to use. Mine ended up being a little over six feet wide. With the two keyboard sections, I created two levels, placing the one with the sharp and flat objects on top.
To play comfortably, your bottom level should be as high as your hand when your arm is bent at a 90-degree angle. I installed castor wheels on mine to make it more portable, to do this I had to put 2 2x4's side by side on each side of the base so there was enough room for the wheels.
Where the wheels were placed, it is extended so that the instrument will not fall easily.
Step 4: Palettes

My palettes were purchased online, but you can make your own. You will need a closed, dense foam similar to what is used in flip flops, but the flip flops are a little denser than the ones I have. You can cut and use the foam for flip flops.
Whatever you decide to use, plug it into some sort of wooden dowel or whatever you can find that works. Experiment with palettes until you find what you like.
Step 5: Assembling the pipes

This is one of the most complicated parts of the entire process. The pipes will hang from the couplings, the pipe is small enough to fit through the hole, but the coupling is too large to fit through. As you add more notes, you'll need to add turns to the pipes to have enough room.
Once you've installed a note, use the tuner to tune it, making small adjustments to do so. I recommend starting from the bottom because the notes get shorter as you go. My lowest note was about 8 feet long, which required me to come down, travel down the instrument, and then move forward. My notAt its tallest it was about 1 foot long.
I got an equation that will give you the length of tube you need when connecting frequency: Tube Length (in) = (13300 / (Frequency 2*)) + (Tube Diameter/2)
For note frequencies in the piano range, go here:
My lowest grade was number 16 (C2) on the wikipedia page list.
Remember, if a note is too high, it is too short. If it's too flat, it's too long.
Step 6: Final Touches

It is not necessary to glue each joint. The best places to glue would be at the couplings or anywhere a joint supports weight. When not glued, notes may fall off while playing. This gets very annoying! You may also want to consider installing something to hold your paddles when you're not playing.
Here are some things I can play on it:
This is a Blue-Man style instrument that my dad and I built over spring break. It is made of PVC pipe and some wood, mainly obtained from restoration. Longer pipes produce deeper sounds with lower pitches and shorter pipes have higher pitches. It's pretty basic. It was built for a science project, and I think it turned out quite nice. Basic dimensions:
Height: 3.5 feet
Width: 4.5 feet
Depth: 3.5 feet
