Today we will show you an innovative idea on how to make your own portable campfire with a storage rack, without a doubt it is a very original idea by reusing a shopping cart.

Start with the search for a suitable shopping cart which has to be one with a chrome finish. I found mine near the loading dock area of a local grocery store and there it was next to a trash compactor. I went into the store and asked the manager if I could buy it and they said I could have it for free. The generosity arose from the fact that today's shopping carts have a powder-coated finish, so the old-style chrome carts are no longer used.
I would suggest staying away from powder paint carts as the heat generated by burning wood in the basket will destroy the finish. The chrome finish will still look good after several burns.
Materials:
- Chrome shopping cart
- 27″ x 8′ steel strip
- Galvanized Steel Drip Flashing
- Galvanized steel corner bead
- 3 Cookie Trays
- Hinges
- 1 galvanized steel loop
- Nuts and bolts
Step 1: Remove the plastic and rubber

The first step after getting your stroller in working order is to remove all the rubber and plastic stuff. There is no reason to leave those who are glued to the car and the heat will make a mess of them. I left the handle in place and after a few test burns found that the heat from the fire did not affect the handle in any way.
Step 2: Bottom Frame

With the rubber and plastic pieces removed, you are ready to begin your project.
Build a frame that fits snugly at the bottom of the basket. For this I used a section of galvanized steel drip edge flashing that I found at the Habitat for Humanity Restoration location. A complement to restore… A great source of materials donated by contractors, large companies and individuals. Be careful when cutting and bending the flashing as I can tell from personal experience that the edges are sharp. The purpose of the frame is to prevent the embers from falling out of the basket.
Step 3: Bottom Tray

When your wife isn't looking, take your cookie sheets and cut out the sides with a jigsaw. Measure and cut to fit inside the frame.
In this step, you can substitute it with available materials. A piece of sheet metal.
Step 4: Align the Cart Sides

The space between the bars in the shopping cart is probably not close enough to prevent embers from flying
so, to play it safe, I lined all four sides with steel slats. The sheets are 27″ x 8″, which is enough for all 4 sides and one leftover piece that you can use for a spark screen cover. Steel slats are miserable things to work with, so keep bandages on hand.
With large washers, you can screw all four sides of the slat to the shopping cart.
Step 5: Spark Screen Cover

Cut the remaining piece of steel slat to the same dimensions as the basket opening and then frame the slat with the galvanized corner bead. Use nuts and bolts on all four sides to keep everything in place.
Step 6: Final Touches

I used two of the sides that were cut from the cookie sheet and screwed them to the bottom tray and voila you have your own portable fire pit with storage rack.
This will create a small space between the burned wood and the pan for better burning. The ties are bolted to the shopping cart and will support the hinges that connect the spark screen to the shopping cart.
