Replace Cat5e Connector: Ethernet Cable, as wired Internet becomes more and more popular, there will be more and more cables throughout your home.

These cables, called cat5e or Ethernet, are responsible for the Internet from your provider to your Router.

The ends of cables can be damaged from time to time, either by dirt or water. However, there is no need to call your internet provider if this happens;

The ends can be replaced through a fairly simple process. Working for a local internet company last summer, I replaced multiple cat5es every day.

I will now guide you through the steps to replace them so you can save time and money in the future.

Supplies:

• Crimper Tool
• Cat5e / Ethernet Cable
• RJ45 Connector / End

Step 1: Remove the old broken end

The crimping tool shown above is capable of cutting the broken end of the cat5e cable.

Simply place the wire through the tool as shown and press the handle to cut it with the blade.

It doesn't matter where you cut the cable, just make sure the cable is long enough to fit your needs.

If you need to make two cables from one, simply cut the cable in half and put in two new ends.

Step 2: Strip the cable

Just like cutting off the old end, the crimping tool can also strip the wire so that the eight inner wires are accessible.

• Put the wire through the tool, making sure it is contained in the semicircle so it is not cut completely.
• The blade should not grip the wire, just touch it enough to cut the outside. Make sure about two inches of wire sticks out the other side so you have enough to work with and tighten the tool.
• While tightening it completely, rotate the crimper so that the blade completely cuts all sides of the cable.
• Turn it all the way around a few times to make sure it cuts all the way around.
• Next, remove the external wire you cut, leaving only the eight colored wires available.

Step 3: Uncoil and straighten the cables

Next, simply unroll the cables so that there are eight people, not 4 intertwined. This next step is not completely necessary, but it makes the remaining process much easier.

Straighten each wire as best you can, this makes putting them in the correct order a much easier process and you won't have to repeat it a hundred times (I learned the hard way).

Step 4: Orient the cables

Now for the hard part. The eight cables must go in a specific order in order to work. If you look closely, there are four colors: orange, blue, green and brown.

There is one wire of each color that is solid, and another wire that is white with the colored stripe.

For example, there is a green wire and a white wire with a green stripe.

Striped wires are known as white, then the color (e.g. white-green, white-brown).

The correct order of the eight wires is white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown.

It is easier to take the first wire, the white-orange one, and pull it to the left, making it as straight as possible.

As you go through the order and add more cables, use one hand to hold them in place and the other to add cables to your left hand.

Step 5: Cut the cables to length

This step will take some time and repeated testing (alsolearned the hard way). The wires will need to be cut so that the shield (the outer covering that protects the colored wires) is crimped onto the end you are about to attach.

This will take some practice, but I have learned that colored wires should be cut to approximately the length of your nail.

The cables can be cut using the blade on the crimper, in the same way as the previous end was cut.

Step 6: End and crimp

The last step is to actually put the ending. This is the shortest step simply because you will most likely have to repeat all the others.

If you look closely at the new end, you can see 8 pieces of metal, one for each colored wire (obviously).

With the end of the cable pointing away from you, hold the end of the cable with the white-orange, orange to the left.

The connector continues with the tab facing down and all cables should fit into each channel. It will take some force to get the finish around, as shown in the two images above.

Make sure the order is not messed up. It is also very important to make sure that each colored wire goes completely through the connector and touches the end.

Cut the cables shorter if necessary. If the wires are not long enough to touch the end, you will need to remove more wire and repeat from step 2.

When the connector is on and all the wires are touching the end, place the end in the slot shown above on the crimp and tighten the tool.

Make sure the end is all the way in and be sure to tighten all the way; I usually squeeze the handle two or three times.

Now, if done correctly, you should have a working Ethernet cable!
