Rustic Shelf with Industrial Chains, the idea of the shelf prevailed since we found the perfect place for it.

We decided on a rustic shelf with industrial elements that would fit well with the bedroom decor.

Step 2: Gather Materials and Preparation

Only a few materials are needed for this shelf.

We get a piece of angle iron from the trash. We purchased a chain and some other equipment needed to finish the rack.

We start by cutting the ends of the board to fit the space and to give it clean sides. The board was sanded and painted with layers of varnish.

We cut the angle iron to size with a portable band saw, although many different tools could be used to achieve this.

Step 3: Prepare the chain and anchor points

We cut the chain to approximate length with the bolt cutters.

The anchor points and chain were lightly sprayed with rubbed bronze oil to give it an aged look.

Once dry, the anchor points were screwed into the front corners of the shelf.

Step 4: Place the shelf on the wall

Although the chain appears to keep the shelf secure, most of the weight is supported by the angle iron.

First we attach the angle iron to the wall and then secure the shelf to the angle iron.

The chain was put in place to check the length.

We cut it to size, as well as cut sections of the top and bottom links, which we attached to the wall and shelf anchor points.

The last step was to attach the anchor points to the wall and connect the chain.

Step 5: The platform

Finally, we tried a couple of staging ideas.

We love the idea of a castle sitting on it, as the shelf looks like a drawbridge, although we also like the Harry Potter inspired shelf decor!
