Rustic Style Recycled Wood Lamp, if you are in the market for a new lamp, you may notice that most of them are made of the same materials or follow the same design.
Not to mention the price you pay is for the unique and modern ones.
This article will show you how to build a light that has a unique design, is easy to build, fairly inexpensive and unique.
Step 1: Wood

The first material you need is wood. I'm using a heart of pine from an old dresser for this project, however any wood will do.
The reclaimed look is popular and most of the time the wood is free, so this is a good route to take.
The first step is to cut the boards to size. The size of the lamp is 18″ tall with a 12″x12″ square shape, so I cut it to the 18 inch length. After cutting it to size, I tore the board into 1.25″ strips and sanded the paint.
The pine is 3/4″ thick which is thick for light. Therefore, I cut the strips in half to give me two equal strips just over a quarter of an inch thick (photo 4).
You don't have a method to thin the stock or want to save a few steps, then the best solution is to use wood that is already 1/4″ thick, such as plywood, or red oak strips that have been cut to a quarter-inch thick.
Step 2: Build the framework

The frame is just two simple 12x12 squares (image #2). The wood measures 1″ wide by 3/4″ thick and 12″ long. They are joined with flange joints (photo #1)
Step 3: Glue

The first step is to glue the frame and then cover it with glue. Next, place the wooden strips on the glued frame and equip them evenly to allow the same light to pass through. I spaced the strips about 1/8″ apart for reference.
This step may take a while because you don't want to move the light when the glue is wet. After one side has dried, do the remaining three.
Step 4: Wood Finishing

There you go, now you have something that looks like a light. Not all the strips were the same length, so I cut the projections with a very fine-toothed saw and removed the excess glue drops.
The wood is then finished with shellac. I love using oil, but it doesn't look good on pine.
Step 5: Building the light bulb frame

I'm using a pendant light socket from IKEA that costs about five dollars, although you can probably save an old one. The socket is nice, however the problem is that it must be attached to the wood.
To attach the light socket to the wood, I will build a metal frame for the light bulb from common wire hangers. The first thing is to cut and bend the wire to give it the shape as in image No. 3, don't forget to addadd extra length to the cable. After folding the first one, create another one that is identical to the first.
The two hangers need to be joined together and for that I used brass wire. I simply continually wound the wire around the two until they structurally became one.
Next, I cleaned the finish of the hanger and brightened it with steel wool.
Step 6: Bulb Installation

First of all, there must be holes in the wooden frame for the metal to attach, which I drilled four equally around the light.
Next, insert the bulb into the holes and center it well. After the bulb is centered, bend the ends of the additional wire to secure the wire frame to the wood.
Step 7: Ready!

I inserted a 60 watt fluorescent light into the socket and plugged it in. The light is a hand-built, one-of-a-kind piece that you can easily show off. Overall, all I had to buy was the light bulb and socket, however, even if I had to buy wood, it shouldn't cost that much.
I will definitely state that this lamp is unique and I hope you agree. If you have any questions or find a better way to connect the plug to the wood, please comment.
