Vinyl Wall: Cool Decorating Ideas Apartments, however, are often a pain to paint and then paint to cover up their amazing paint, and an especially big pain when you move them as frequently as I do.

I like to have bright and interesting spaces, so I brainstormed a large piece of art that I could perhaps mount on the wall or other types of removable decor, and the universe smiled on me with inspiration from one of my favorite blogs: A friend made a neat post about using contact paper to make wall decals.

Step 1: Things you need

Supplies you will need:

  • Contact paper (a brand of low-tack self-adhesive vinyl, commonly used by grandmas as “shelf liners,” has a very matte finish) or a thin, low-tack self-adhesive vinyl.
  • Tape (preferably easily visible and low tack, such as painter's tape or duct tape)
  • Writing utensil (marker or pencil)
  • Scissors
  • Oversized waste paper (such as newspapers or used newspapers)
  • Plastic card (like a library card, this is not pictured).

Step 2: Test the adhesive!

Take a segment of your contact paper, stick it firmly to a hidden wall, and peel it off again. Use a plastic card (such as a library card) to press it firmly onto the surface. Also test that the tape can be removed easily.

I tested my sticky stuff on an indoor closet wall, and found that my contact paper was just as sticky. It was almost non-stick, which is fine by me, since I don't want to pay for damage to my walls when it comes time to move!) My tape also came off very easily, so I was ready to go.

Step 3: Method 1 – Paper Sketch

I have two different methods for planning large projects like this, and I made them both to share here.

  • Method 1: The paper sketch. All you need is a pencil and a piece of paper. Draw a sketch of the area you want to work on. I distorted my drawing a little so I could see the 3 walls and the ceiling in one layout on my diagram.

Now that you have a basic diagram, you can photocopy it and doodle various designs to see what you like. Or, use tracing paper on top of your basic diagram. Or, trace your original diagram in marker, then draw your ideas in pencil and erase what you don't like until you have a final design you like.

Step 4: Method 2 – All Digital

This method is for tech experts, or if you are more confident in your editing skills than your drawing skills.

  • Method 2: Photos and software. For this method, take some digital photos of your space. Next, bring your photos into an image editing program and then digitally doodle over them.

I used Adobe Illustrator and had a great time.

Step 5: Draw on the (paper) walls

The general process is to do one twist at a time, overlapping them to get a smooth connection, and then patch the gaps in between at the end. Overlays with these things are invisible once you are more than 6″ away from the surface.

So, to make the first turn, tape a sheet of newspaper to the target location. Fold the paper at the seam between the walls so that the paper is on two surfacess, so that it helps you draw through the dimensions. Using the pencil, I sketched out the swirl as I wanted it to appear in the area. . I also drew a line along the crease in the wall (if it's in a crease) to help me align the contact paper with the corner later.

Pull the paper down and clean its swirl. It'll probably be a little thick and awkward if you draw on the wall (you're standing on a safe stool or ladder, if it's too high to reach, right?), so check your lines or adjust them to soften them.

Step 6: Transfer to Contact Paper

Cut the newspaper to create a stencil. Now turn your newspaper template over. You can now trace the template on the back of the contact paper with marker. The newsprint swirl is because you are drawing on the contact paper paper, which is ultimately the back of the swirl. In order for the swirl to appear in the orientation you intended, you don't need to make that template change.

Add if it doesn't flip, which I forgot to do several times, I just used the new swirl in a different place. It's still a great swirl to use, if it's upside down.

Cut the swirl out of the contact paper. It should cut very easily, and you can slide through it like wrapping paper if you have good scissors.

Step 7: Peel and stick

For the first few swirls, I left the backing paper on and simply taped the swirl onto the wall/ceiling to get an idea of where it would be and what it would look like, estimating the location from my original plans.

Now that I was stuck there, I started at the base of the swirl, lifted the first 6″ or so and removed its backing. Press gently from the center of the vinyl area outward to minimize bubbles, and use a hard piece of plastic (such as a library card) to scrape against the vinyl, pressing it firmly against the wall.

Move along the swirl, pulling the backrest from behind in a 6″ segment, scraping the segment down, then repeat to the end of the swirl. If you tried to remove the entire backing initially, the entire piece would stick to itself and you would end up with a wad of vinyl that is difficult to work with.

Trust me: if your piece of vinyl is larger than a dinner plate, leave the backing and work from one end to the other.

Step 8: More Swirls

Use newspaper to draw more swirls in the areas on the plans, and continue mounting them on your wall. After a while, I stopped using the newsprint as I had an idea of how big the swirl would be and just drew them freehand on my backing contact paper.

Also, don't worry about the middle of the stain while doing the swirls. The swirls are essentially the outline of the bubble.

I continued working my way around the room, to make the sketch complete. I then added a layer of smaller swirls, made from scraps, to add interest and scale to the design.

When you're happy with your spiral outline, trim away the scraps to patch the center area, completing the area you ignored. My seams weren't visible once you were 6″ away from the vinyl, so I actually just repaired it with the pieces that were left. The only part you need to pay special attention to is having the connection points gently curve around each other, so a little trimming on one or two sides of my sloppy patches would make them look nice.

Step 9: Bonus! Leftover bamboo

I kept a giant pile of decent-sized pieces, and my male counterpart, my friend, suggested "How about something like bamboo in the living room?" We have a black inlaid Japanese dining table in our living room so I thought it would be perfect.

He is a man of ideas, but not of implementation, so that was it for me. I went to work cutting bone shapes for the bamboo silhouettes and pointed ovals for the leaf shapes. The key is to work as if you were doing a two-tone illustration with this stuff, and don't get stuck in photo realism. It might be helpful to look up illustrations of things you're thinking about making, to see how other artists have distilled the basic shapes.

Another advantage: You can also order whiteboard contact paper. Because contact paper is much easier to install than using chalkboard paint!

Step 10: Bonus 2! Shelf tree

Here is another design I created.
Without a headboard, however, I wanted to "frame" the bed against the wall. I mounted a cantilevered bookshelf on the wall, high above the bed, and created illustrated vinyl trees, like bedposts, that went up to the shelf. I put the shelf up first, I simply cut the vinyl and tucked the edges behind the shelf.

Step 11: Conclusions

Here is the full set of images. My room isn't big enough to stand back and get a panoramic shot or even minimize distortion to stitch a set, so here are simply the three images, in order.

After this first week of scraping the corners once it was installed in place, I didn't have to do anything to maintain the wall vinyl for the next 16 months it was on the wall. Zero maintenance!

This project turned out very well, and I hope it inspires you to do something similar.
