AI-enabled smart lamp-posts are raising new privacy concerns as they begin appearing in UK streets. These solar-powered iLamps from Conflow Power Group can recognise number plates and faces, and even act as distributed AI data centres. But how much surveillance is too much?
What Are AI-Enabled Smart Lamp-Posts?
The iLamp is a solar-powered street light that doubles as a revenue-generating AI data centre. It can incorporate automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), facial recognition, and future capabilities like gait analysis. The first units are installed in a Warwickshire hospital car park, and CPG has signed a deal to supply 50,000 to Katsina State, Nigeria.

How Do They Compare to Traditional CCTV?
| Feature | Traditional CCTV | AI-Enabled Smart Lamp-Posts |
|---|---|---|
| Power Source | Grid electricity | Solar panels, self-sufficient |
| Data Processing | Centralised servers | On-device AI + distributed cloud |
| Surveillance Range | Fixed camera view | Multi-angle, adaptive gait analysis |
| Privacy Controls | Limited | Unknown – Big Brother Watch raises alarms |
Key Privacy Risks and Concerns
- Mass data harvesting: Who owns the data collected by iLamps? No clear answer yet.
- Function creep: Capabilities like gait analysis can be added later without public consent.
- Government ideology: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has endorsed a 'panopticon state', where citizens are watched constantly.
- Lack of public awareness: Few people even know these lamp-posts exist, let alone their full potential.
What the Experts Say
Big Brother Watch warns that such technology could lead to hyper-surveillance if left unchecked. CPG chairman Edward Fitzpatrick has stated the iLamps are designed for 'public safety and efficiency', but civil liberties groups remain sceptical.
Future Implications for Smart Cities
As AI capabilities evolve, smart lamp-posts could become ubiquitous. The question is whether we have the regulatory framework to safeguard privacy while embracing innovation.
FAQ
What are AI-enabled smart lamp-posts?
They are solar-powered street lights that incorporate AI capabilities like facial recognition and ANPR, and can also function as distributed data centres, generating revenue from excess computing power.
Are these lamp-posts already installed in the UK?
Yes, the first iLamps are operational in a hospital car park in Warwickshire, though public awareness is minimal.
Why should I be worried about these smart lamp-posts?
Because they can harvest vast amounts of personal data without clear ownership or consent, and their capabilities can be upgraded over time – potentially leading to a permanent surveillance state.
In summary, AI-enabled smart lamp-posts offer intriguing benefits but also pose serious privacy risks. As the technology rolls out, staying informed and demanding transparency is crucial. Read the full investigation to understand what these 'spies in the sky' mean for your daily life.
