The recent decision by a New York school district to halt its humanoid robot pilot program has sparked widespread debate about AI in education. The Salamanca City Central School District paused plans to introduce a robot named Sally from Realbotix after backlash from educators and community members. Concerns centered on student data privacy and the company's association with sex doll manufacturing.
Why the Humanoid Robot Plan Was Paused
The district announced on July 24 that the pilot project was on hold while it works on enhanced student data privacy agreements with the New York State Education Department. Officials also stated they would continue engaging with stakeholders and incorporating community input. This reversal came after strong criticism from the New York State United Teachers union, which condemned using a robot built by a company linked to sex dolls.

Backlash from Educators and Community
Melinda Person, president of the teachers union, said, “A robot built by a company associated with sex dolls has no business in our classrooms. Our students don’t need robots. They need real relationships with caring adults.” The district, located on the Seneca Nation reservation in upstate New York, serves a large Native American population, adding cultural sensitivity to the controversy.
