The Australian politician Barnaby Joyce made headlines worldwide after yelling at his dog during a live interview on ABC's 7.30 program. The incident, which occurred while defending One Nation leader Pauline Hanson's controversial European tour, quickly went viral and overshadowed the political discussion. Viewers watched as Joyce's eyes darted off-screen before he suddenly shouted "Sit down!" at his dog, Stella, then apologized and continued answering questions.
Political Context of the Interview
Pauline Hanson, a populist hard-right figure often compared to Nigel Farage, had been on a European tour that included holidaying with mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, speaking at a conservative conference in London, and meeting far-right activist Tommy Robinson. The trip generated significant controversy, with critics accusing Hanson of promoting intolerance. Joyce, a former deputy prime minister who defected from the National Party to One Nation in December, was tasked with defending Hanson's actions during the interview.

The Tense Exchange with Host Sarah Ferguson
Host Sarah Ferguson pressed Joyce on his defection, suggesting it was "dragging him further into a place of intolerance and racial discrimination." She asked, "You're defending your leader, but are you really comfortable with where she is taking you?" Joyce's distracted behavior, including the dog interruption, allowed him to avoid directly answering the question. Instead, he pivoted to discussing One Nation's growing polling support.
Viral Moment and Public Reaction
The dog incident quickly spread across social media, with many users creating memes and jokes about the interruption. This is not the first time Joyce has been involved in a dog-related news story; in 2015, he had a run-in with Johnny Depp's pets. The table below compares the two incidents:

|---|---|---|
| Barnaby Joyce yells at dog Stella during live interview | 2025 | Viral moment, overshadowed political discussion |
