Australians will soon have the power to block all online gambling ads with a new one-stop opt-out register announced by the federal government. This move aims to give users control over the gambling advertisements they see across digital platforms. The register, to be developed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), is expected to be operational within 12 months.
What is the Opt-Out Register for Online Gambling Ads?
The Labor government has long promised action on online gambling ads as part of its broader gambling reforms. Initially, a “triple lock” system was proposed, requiring each online platform to provide an individual opt-out button. However, after negotiations with the Coalition, Communications Minister Anika Wells announced a new centralised register. This “one-stop shop” allows Australians to opt out of seeing wagering advertising on all online platforms simultaneously, addressing concerns that individual opt-outs would be cumbersome and ineffective.

How Will the Register Work?
While the legislation leaves many details to ACMA, it is envisaged that users can register their name, email address, or phone number to elect never to see gambling ads on any online service—including streaming platforms, banner ads, and podcasts. Platforms would be required to check the register every 14 days to ensure they are not showing ads to opted-out users. The system is often compared to the Do Not Call list for telemarketing or the BetStop self-exclusion register for betting.
Comparison: Opt-Out Register vs. Individual Opt-Outs
| Feature | One-Stop Opt-Out Register | Individual Platform Opt-Outs |
|---|---|---|
| User Effort | Single registration covers all platforms | Must opt out on each website separately |
| Effectiveness | Centralised enforcement by ACMA | Relies on each platform’s compliance |
| Privacy | Data stored in a central register | Data shared with each platform |
| Update Frequency | Platforms check every 14 days | Immediate but inconsistent |
Key Takeaways
- One-stop solution: A single opt-out register will block online gambling ads across all platforms.
- ACMA oversight: The authority will design, implement, and enforce the register.
- Privacy concerns: Questions remain about data security and how user information will be handled.
- Timeline: The register is expected to be live within 12 months, with interim opt-out requirements starting 1 January.
- Potential impact: If effective, it could significantly reduce exposure to gambling advertising for Australians.
