Will the 2026 Census Be Online?
Yes, the digital census remains the primary method. In the 2021 census, nearly 80% of Australians completed the survey online, up from 63% in 2016. The ABS encourages online completion for efficiency, but paper forms are still available for those who need them. The online form offers convenience, privacy, and real-time progress saving.
Why Does the Census Matter?
The census is a compulsory national population count that provides vital data on the economic, social, and cultural makeup of Australia. This information guides government decisions on health, education, transport, infrastructure, and social services. As national spokesperson Emily Walter explains, "In order to effectively serve a community, you need to know how many people there are, who they are, and where they are."
New Questions in 2026
This year's census introduces questions about gender and sexual orientation, making it more inclusive. These changes will help policymakers better understand and support diverse communities. The ABS has worked with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups to ensure questions are respectful and accurate.
