Former NSW MPs are exacting revenge years after their downfalls, as seen in the recent ICAC testimony of David Elliott. The former senior minister revealed a web of cults, setups, and devastating rumours that ended his political career.
The Downfall of a Senior Minister
David Elliott served for eight years in the Baird, Berejiklian, and Perrottet Liberal governments, but his political career came to an abrupt end in 2023. His seat was abolished, and he faced branch stacking that made preselection impossible. For years, he suspected foul play, and his appearance at the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) finally allowed him to air his grievances.

Elliott testified that developer Jean Nassif, now a fugitive in Lebanon, orchestrated a campaign against him. This included planting negative news stories, hiring private investigators, issuing death threats, and spreading rumours about an affair while his wife battled cancer. The root of the conflict was Elliott's opposition to rapid development in the Hills due to inadequate infrastructure.
ICAC Investigation and Branch Stacking
The ICAC investigation focuses on illegal secret donations from property developers used to fund branch-stacking operations, violating the NSW Electoral Funding Act. Elliott appeared as a witness, not a person of interest, but his testimony shed light on the extent of the manipulation.
Branch stacking involves recruiting members to influence preselections, often funded by undeclared donations. This practice undermines democratic processes and has been a recurring issue in NSW politics.
Key Allegations and Evidence
| Allegation | Details | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Media manipulation | Nassif planted stories to damage Elliott's reputation | Elliott's testimony, corroborated by ICAC findings |
| Surveillance | Private investigators followed Elliott | Witness statements and phone records |
| Death threats | Threats made against Elliott and his family | Police reports and security logs |
| Rumour spreading | False affair rumours during wife's cancer treatment | Social media posts and insider accounts |
Revenge as a Political Tool
Elliott's case is not isolated. Many former NSW MPs have faced similar tactics, and some have sought revenge through legal channels or public exposure. The ICAC hearings provide a platform for these individuals to clear their names and hold perpetrators accountable.
This phenomenon highlights the darker side of politics, where personal vendettas and underhanded tactics can derail careers. It also underscores the importance of transparency and oversight in political processes.
