The Albanian ambassador to the UK has condemned the unhinged fixation of right-wing politicians and media on the 2022 migrant surge, calling for a data-driven debate on immigration.
Uran Ferizi, who arrived in Britain as a teenage stowaway and later studied mathematics at Oxford, released a 10-page report based on Home Office and Migration Observatory data. The report shows that 12,658 Albanians crossed the Channel in 2022—a spike that represented just 1% of total UK long-term immigration that year.

Albanian Migrant Surge: Facts vs. Hysteria
Ferizi emphasized that the influx was "real, exceptional, and short-lived," with arrivals falling sharply afterward. He noted that most of the 2022 cohort has since left the UK, yet the narrative persists.
"A loud minority in British politics and media has kept the Albanian migration crisis alive long after it ended in the data," Ferizi said. He called on Reform UK to stop "Albanian-spotting" and focus on issues like youth unemployment.
The Role of UK Visa Policy
The report suggests that restrictive UK visa policies for Albanians compared to other Balkan countries may have pushed vulnerable people toward people traffickers. This insight challenges the simplistic portrayal of Albanian migrants as a threat.
| Year | Albanian Channel Crossings | Share of UK Long-Term Immigration |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 12,658 | ~1% |
| 2023 | Significant decline | N/A |
| 2024 | Minimal | N/A |
Key Takeaways from the Ambassador's Report
- Albanian migration peaked in 2022 and has since dropped dramatically.
- The 2022 cohort represented a tiny fraction of overall UK immigration.
- UK visa policy may have inadvertently fueled illegal crossings.
- Right-wing rhetoric is out of step with actual data.
