Andy Burnham has pledged to end Labour infighting and lead a united government as he becomes the party’s new leader, promising a distinctly leftwing vision for Britain. In his first address after taking over, Burnham vowed to undo Thatcher-era policies, expand public ownership of utilities, and invest in social care and council housing, while also insisting he would remain pro-business. His election marks what he calls the most significant change in British politics in 40 years.
Burnham’s Vision for a United Labour Government
Burnham emphasized the need for unity, stating, “Factionalism has bedevilled us. Today we moved beyond it.” He appealed to party members to rally together to “beat Britain’s new right” and avoid repeating past mistakes. His platform includes nationalizing key utilities, building a new generation of council homes, and fixing the social care system—policies that signal a sharp break from the Conservative era.

Pro-Business Stance Amid Leftwing Policies
Despite his leftwing agenda, Burnham reassured business leaders that he would be “pro-business,” drawing on his experience as mayor of Greater Manchester. He argued that economic growth and social justice can go hand in hand, a balance he hopes will attract both traditional Labour supporters and skeptical centrists. However, tensions are already emerging over his cabinet choices.
Cabinet Appointments and Internal Tensions
Burnham delayed announcing his cabinet until after Keir Starmer formally hands over the role of prime minister, defending the move as necessary to avoid “chaos.” The frontrunner for chancellor is Shabana Mahmood, a Blue Labour figure on the right of the party, which has sparked anxiety on the left. Ed Miliband, the left’s preferred candidate, is seen as an alternative. Other potential appointments include Jonathan Reynolds as head of an expanded business department and Wes Streeting as defence secretary.

Labour sources also hinted at a “big beast” being lined up for foreign secretary, as Burnham focuses on domestic priorities. The delayed announcements have fueled speculation about internal power struggles, but Burnham insists he is building a team that reflects the party’s broad coalition.
